Pros and cons
Co-extruded polymer cap is fused to the core under heat, providing measurably higher resistance to UV fade, staining, and mould than uncapped composite
Ebony Black reads cleanly across the surface and holds its tone evenly over time thanks to the in-cap pigmentation
Suitable for harsh-aspect, coastal, and high-traffic settings where uncapped composite would struggle
Surface stays sound for years on a wash-and-go cleaning routine, with no oiling or staining required
Capped surface is harder than the core; cuts require a slow, fine-toothed blade to avoid chipping
Costs more than a single-extrusion board, with the difference reflecting the extra extrusion step and protective layer

Product description
PuraShield Co-Extruded Composite Decking
PuraShield is co-extruded composite decking: a structural wood-and-polymer core encapsulated in a continuous polymer cap. The two layers are bonded under heat during extrusion, producing a board where the protective surface is integral to the board itself rather than applied as a coating. The result is a deck that resists UV fade, staining, mould, and surface damage to a measurably higher standard than uncapped composite, while retaining the structural performance of the engineered core.
Ebony Black is a true deep black with a fine grain finish that prevents the dead-flat look of cheaper black composites. It’s the choice when the deck or cladding is intended as a feature rather than a backdrop.
Why co-extrusion matters
The shield is what takes the punishment a deck actually faces: persistent rain, prolonged damp, leaf-litter staining, mould pressure under shaded trees, and the occasional spillage from a barbecue. Because the cap is non-porous and continuous, water sits on the surface rather than soaking in, stains lift cleanly, and there is no fibrous substrate for mould to colonise. UV fade is reduced because the coloured pigment lives within the cap formulation, not on a surface coating that breaks down.
Where it works
Anywhere a standard hollow composite would, plus the situations where standard composite struggles: harsh south-facing aspects, coastal sites with salt-air loading, BBQ zones, and family decks under regular real-world use. Ebony Black in particular suits these settings because the cap formulation holds the colour evenly across the surface over time.
Installation guidance
Hidden-clip system on joists at 350 mm centres, with standard composite expansion gaps. Cuts should be made with a fine-toothed blade at moderate speed; the cap is harder than the core and a fast cut can chip the surface edge. Pre-drill if face-fixing at any point. The PuraShield installation manual covers joist-spacing tables, recommended clip systems, and detailed cutting guidance.
Care & maintenance
The capped surface keeps cleaning to the level of a brush and warm water. Stubborn marks respond to a non-abrasive composite cleaner. The Ebony Black finish mellows slightly over the first six months and then holds steady. The PuraShield care guide covers approved products and the rare situations where intervention is warranted.
Complete the deck
Compatible substructure components, fixings, and matched cleaning products are listed in the related products section at the bottom of this page. Adding them to the cart alongside the boards keeps the project on a single delivery.
