Douglas Fir Fence Panel – Framed, Mesh
Specify Douglas fir and you’re buying one of the longest-lasting softwoods money can sensibly stretch to — a panel that holds its own for years where ordinary pine would be on its second replacement. Milled from European-grown Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), prized for its warm honey-to-russet tones and tight, resinous grain, this framed mesh panel pairs a sturdy structural surround with an open trellis-style infill that’s tailor-made for climbing plants. Stocked in our yard for delivery across Ireland, it gives you a robust, naturally durable boundary at full 1800 mm height — equally at home as a standalone screen or as the bones of a living, planted green wall.
Why Douglas fir?
Douglas fir sits a clear notch above the everyday softwoods. Its natural durability comfortably outperforms standard spruce and pine, and its dense, resinous grain gives it real resistance to decay and the warping that ruins cheaper panels — which is why it’s a go-to for fencing that needs to look good and stay straight for the long haul.
It’s also one of the better-looking timbers in its class. Those warm golden-brown to reddish hues bring genuine character to a boundary, and the framed mesh format plays to its strengths: the solid surround carries the structure while the open infill keeps things light and gives climbers something to grip. The honest insider note — like all timber it greys outdoors if left bare, so the colour is yours to keep or let go.
Installation guidance
You don’t need specialist skills to fit these well. The panels arrive ready to drop in at full 1800 mm height, so the work is mostly setting your posts square and plumb — they sit neatly between 7×7 cm hardwood posts or 10×10 cm concrete posts, secured with corner brackets for a clean, solid result.
Two practical points worth heeding. First, position the panel a few centimetres clear of ground level rather than letting the frame sit in soil or standing water — keeping the timber out of the wet adds real years to its life. Second, if you’re planting climbers through the mesh, get them established early; once they take hold, the framed infill does a beautiful job of carrying the growth.
Finishing & maintenance
You have two good options with Douglas fir, and there’s no wrong answer. The natural route — leaving the timber untreated to weather gently to a soft silver-grey over the fir
