Ecowood Battens
Ecowood battens are planed softwood boards for slatted fences, garden screens, feature walls and cladding, with a warm honey-brown tone and an ease edge profile. Choose 44×18 mm or 94×18 mm battens, or a wide 140×16 mm board, then the length on the product page; longer battens mean fewer joins on long runs. Every size is stocked in our warehouse and delivered across Ireland.

Ecowood Battens for Sale in Ireland
Ecowood is our own brand of outdoor softwood, and the value choice in our battens range. It is engineered for stability and supplied with consistent quality from one board to the next, so a slatted screen keeps even gaps and straight lines. At around 520 kg/m³, it is light enough to handle single-handed but solid enough to feel like proper timber, and it has a service life of 25 years and beyond when properly looked after.
Ecowood batten sizes
Battens are still ordered by their old imperial names, so a “2×1” is roughly 2 inches by 1 inch. You receive the planed size in millimetres, with slightly rounded ease edges:
- The narrow 2×1 (44×18 mm) batten suits fine slatted screens and feature walls.
- The 4×1 (94×18 mm) is the all-round fence batten; choose a longer length for wide bays without a join, or a shorter one for smaller screens and gates.
- The 6×1 (140×16 mm) is a wide, slim board that gives a bold face for horizontal fencing and screens.
The calculator on each product page works out how many battens you need, and the cart adds the matching fixings for you.
Ecowood battens for fencing and screens
The ease edge profile suits both vertical screen panels and horizontal batten fencing, and the stable boards keep gaps consistent and fixings tight over time. Use them for boundary fences, patio screens, bin store surrounds and slatted feature walls. On a fence the same boards are usually called Ecowood slats, so this one range covers Ecowood fencing, screens and batten work. For full walls see our Ecowood cladding profiles.
Ecowood vs other timber battens
Ecowood keeps costs down on long runs. If you are weighing it up:
- Cedar battens: naturally durable Western Red Cedar, the premium choice.
- Larch fence slats: dense larch in a reddish-brown tone.
- MicroShades fencing: factory finished, with nothing to do on site.
Fixing Ecowood battens
Use A2 or A4 stainless steel fixings outdoors and pre-drill near the board ends to prevent splitting. A spacer block keeps every gap identical. Expect slight colour variation between boards, which lets the finished screen catch the light naturally rather than looking flat.
Looking after Ecowood battens
Ecowood doesn’t need oil to last, but left bare it turns silver grey over 12 to 18 months. Most people prefer to keep the warm honey tone, so they oil the battens within the first few months with a UV protective oil for softwood and refresh it every year or two. You will find the right oil in our exterior oils and stains.
Ecowood is one of the species in our full timber battens range, stocked in our warehouse and delivered across Ireland.
Frequently Asked Questions About Ecowood Battens
What is Ecowood?
Ecowood is our own brand of softwood for outdoor use, supplied with consistent quality from one board to the next. It weighs around 520 kg/m³, so it is easy to handle, and it arrives a warm honey-brown with an even grain.
How long do Ecowood battens last outdoors?
Ecowood is quoted at a service life of 25 years and beyond when properly looked after. Use A2 or A4 stainless steel fixings, keep the ends clear of standing water, and oil it with a UV protective oil for softwood to keep the honey-brown colour instead of letting it weather to silver.
What sizes are available?
Ecowood battens come in 44×18 mm and 94×18 mm, plus a wide 140×16 mm board. The wide board gives a bolder face on horizontal fences and screens, and every size is sold in a choice of lengths.
Are Ecowood slats the same as Ecowood battens?
Yes. Ecowood slats and Ecowood battens are the same planed boards with an ease edge, in 44×18 mm, 94×18 mm and a wide 140×16 mm. They are called slats on a fence and battens on a screen or cladding frame, so you can order either use from this page.
