Spruce Posts
Our spruce post is a 90×90 mm square softwood post, supplied black stained for fences, gates, pergolas and garden screens where you want a dark, modern frame. Spruce is light, straight and easy to work, and the black stain gives it a finished colour from the day it goes up. Keep the finish topped up and it holds its look outdoors. Stocked in our warehouse and delivered across Ireland.

Black Spruce Posts for Sale in Ireland
Spruce is the softwood much of Europe builds with. It is light, at around 470 kg/m³, machines cleanly and takes paint, stain and oil with very little preparation, which makes it a good base for a coloured finish. Our 90×90 mm spruce post arrives already stained black, so it suits contemporary gardens where the frame should step back and let planting, slats or panels take the eye.
Spruce post size and uses
The post comes in one section, 90×90 mm, which covers the most common garden jobs: fence and gate posts, the uprights of a slatted screen, and the posts of a small pergola or garden frame. Pick a length that matches your fence or screen height plus the part you set into a base, then trim the top to line up with the run.
Spruce post or a naturally durable species?
Spruce is rated Durability Class 4, which means it relies on its finish outdoors rather than on natural oils. In return you get a light, easy post with a clean black look and no hardwood weight to handle. If you want a post that relies on density instead, compare our Yellow Balau posts or oak posts and beams. For a natural honey tone see Ecowood posts and beams, and for a factory-finished post with matching handrails see MicroShades posts.
Installing a spruce post
Because spruce needs protecting, the way you set the post matters most:
- Keep the end grain out of the soil. Stand the post on a post holder or a concrete post base, or set it in concrete above ground level.
- Pre-drill fixings and use galvanised or stainless steel hardware.
- Treat any cut end with preservative, then touch it up with black stain so the colour stays even.
- Join rails and beams with post connectors for a neat, strong joint.
Keeping the black finish
Spruce needs its finish kept up to last outdoors. Recoat every two or three years, sooner on the weather side, and the post keeps its deep black colour and its protection. Choose an exterior stain or finish from our oils and stains range and do the whole run at once so it all matches.

Frequently Asked Questions About Spruce Posts
Is the spruce post suitable outdoors?
Yes, with protection. It comes black stained, but spruce is Durability Class 4, so keep the finish up by recoating every two or three years and treat any cut ends with preservative.
How should I install a spruce post?
Set it in concrete or on a post anchor above ground, since direct ground contact shortens the life of any softwood significantly. Pre-drill and use galvanised or stainless hardware.
