Composite cladding for garden rooms
PuraShell composite cladding is a capped tongue and groove (T&G) board, and it is our everyday choice of composite cladding for garden rooms, extensions and new builds. T&G means each board’s tongue locks into the groove of the next, so the wall reads as one continuous, flat face with the screws hidden. You get the look of timber cladding with a surface that needs no oiling, staining or painting, which suits a garden room that should look as good in five years as the day it went up.
Garden rooms are where composite earns its keep. They sit low among planting and lawns, catch splashes from sprinklers and rain bouncing off paving, and are usually seen close up. A capped board shrugs off that wet, shaded life, wipes clean and won’t grey or split the way bare timber can. PuraShell also pairs neatly with a deck: its five colours share their names with our PuraShield capped composite decking, so the room and the deck in front of it can match.
Capped tongue and groove cladding
PuraShell is a wood plastic composite (WPC), made from recycled wood fibres and high-density polyethylene (HDPE), a hard-wearing plastic. It is made by co-extrusion: the composite core and a tough outer cap are extruded together, so the cap is bonded all the way around the board rather than applied afterwards. That cap is what makes it capped composite cladding:
- Stain resistance: the dense cap doesn’t soak up dirt, bird droppings or garden run-off, so marks wash off.
- Colour: the colour sits in the cap, the layer that faces the weather, and there is no coating on top to wear, peel or renew.
- Moisture: the core is sealed inside the cap, so the board doesn’t take up water the way timber does.
- Look: a woodgrain face gives the warmth of timber on a flat, even board.
PuraShell colours and matching corner trims
Five colours in three families, so you can pick by the house, the garden or the deck:
- Greys (Light Grey, Dark Grey): for modern houses, render and dark window frames.
- Black (Ebony Black): for a garden room or extension that is meant to stand out against planting.
- Wood tones (Cedar, Teak): for the warmth of timber, as on PuraShell Cedar composite cladding.
Finish external corners, window reveals and cut ends with PuraFix co-extruded corner trims, made in the same capped composite in matching colours, so the corners weather with the wall. They are in our cladding trims, and each board’s page suggests the right one.
PuraShell board size
Every PuraShell board is 21 mm thick, a slim section that keeps the wall build-up tight around garden room doors and windows. The length and width of each board are listed on its product page. To work out how many boards you need, measure the wall area, take off the windows and doors, and enter it in the calculator on the board’s page. The cart adds the matching screws and trims automatically.
Installing PuraShell cladding
PuraShell goes up over battens with a screw fixing system, like most T&G cladding. The basics:
- Battens and cavity: fix cladding battens to the wall so there is a ventilated cavity, an air gap that lets moisture escape from behind the boards. On a garden room, fix them over the breather membrane.
- Fixing: screw the boards to the battens through the tongue, so the next board hides the fixing. Stainless steel screws are in our cladding screws.
- Expansion: composite moves slightly with temperature, so leave a small gap at board ends and against windows and doors, as the installation guide sets out.
- One order: order the boards, trims and screws together so everything arrives on a single delivery.
PuraShell or another composite cladding
PuraShell is the capped, flat-faced board in our range, with the broadest use. If you want a wall with deep shadow lines, PuraTech composite slatted cladding is the feature range, capped like PuraShell and 33 mm thick, in six colours. If a fire class leads the decision, PuraClassic composite cladding is a flat T&G board classified Euroclass B, in Charcoal. Compare every range in our composite cladding collection.
PuraShell in Dublin and across Ireland
All five PuraShell colours are held in our Dublin warehouse. See them in our Dublin showroom, collect your order there, or have it delivered anywhere in Ireland.
Frequently Asked Questions About PuraShell Composite Cladding
What maintenance does PuraShell cladding need?
Very little. PuraShell is capped composite, so there is no oil, stain or paint to renew. Wash it with warm soapy water and a soft brush once or twice a year, and rinse any garden run-off or bird droppings from the lower boards as you see them.
Are there matching trims for PuraShell?
Yes. PuraFix co-extruded corner trims come in colours that match PuraShell, and each board’s page suggests the right one. They are made from the same hard-wearing capped composite, so they weather with the boards.
How many PuraShell boards do I need?
Measure the wall area, take off the windows and doors, and enter it in the calculator on the product page. It works out the number of boards, and the cart adds the matching screws and trims automatically.
What is capped composite cladding?
Capped, or co-extruded, composite cladding has a tough polymer cap bonded around a wood plastic core during manufacture. The cap faces the weather, resists stains and holds the colour, while the core gives the board its strength. PuraShell and PuraTech are both capped boards.
