Chestnut Fencing for Sale in Ireland

Sweet chestnut has been a rural fencing timber in Ireland for centuries. Our chestnut paling comes as a roll of cleft pales on wire, with matching round chestnut posts, stocked in our warehouse and delivered across Ireland.

              What Is Chestnut Paling?

Chestnut paling is a run of pales split, rather than sawn, from sweet chestnut and held together with twisted wire top and bottom. Splitting along the grain keeps the fibres whole, which is part of why it lasts. Each pale varies a little in width, taper and texture, giving the fence its natural, rustic look.

              Chestnut Fencing Roll and Posts

Each chestnut fencing roll is 1.2 m high and 5 m long. The English chestnut fence posts that go with it are 1.8 m high and 80 to 90 mm in diameter, so set about 600 mm in the ground they leave 1.2 m above ground to match the roll.

Allow a post about every 2 m, plus a post at each end and at every corner. A single 5 m roll typically needs 4 posts.

              Why Choose Chestnut

              • Durability Class 2: a service life of 25 years and beyond, naturally resistant to rot and insect attack without chemical treatment.
              • Follows the ground: a roll bends round gentle curves and over uneven ground where rigid panels can’t.
              • Looks right in the landscape: honey brown pales that weather into the hedgerow, for rural boundaries, paddocks, kitchen gardens and planted beds.

How to Put Up Chestnut Paling

              • Set a firm straining post at each end of the run, concreted or well rammed in.
              • Drive intermediate posts along the line about every 2 m.
              • Unroll the paling along the posts and tension it firmly from the end post before fixing the intermediates.
              • Fix the top and bottom wires to each post with galvanised staples.

              Chestnut Gate

To finish a chestnut paling run, our English chestnut gate comes with two matching chestnut posts and a full fitting kit. See it with our other garden gates.

              Oiling Chestnut Fencing

Chestnut doesn’t need treating to last, because its natural tannins protect it. Left bare, it weathers to silver grey. Most people oil it to keep the warm honey tone, refreshing it every two or three years. See our wood oils and stains.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chestnut Fencing

Chestnut paling is a roll of pales cleft, rather than sawn, from European sweet chestnut and held on wire. Because each pale is split along the grain, you will see natural variation in width, taper and texture, which gives it an organic, rural look.

It doesn’t need treating to last. Sweet chestnut’s natural tannins resist rot and decay without chemicals. Left bare it weathers to silver grey, so most people apply a hardwood oil to keep the warmer tone, refreshing it every two or three years. See our wood oils and stains.

Unroll it along the boundary between straining posts at each end, with intermediate stakes along the run. Tension the roll firmly before fixing the intermediates, fix the top and bottom wires to each post with galvanised staples, and lift the bottom wire clear of long wet grass.

Yes. A chestnut roll follows uneven ground and gentle curves cleanly where rigid panels cannot, which makes it a good fit for rural boundaries and planted gardens.

Yes. The English chestnut gate comes with two matching chestnut posts and a full fitting kit, so it finishes a chestnut paling run with the same weathering timber.
