Cedar Fence Battens for Sale in Ireland
Our cedar fence battens are Western Red Cedar, graded Clear Heart Vertical Grain, the highest commercial grade. They’re used for slatted fence screens, pergola and gate infills, privacy screens, bin stores and batten cladding. On a fence the same red cedar battens are often called cedar slats, so both names are sold here. Every length is stocked in our warehouse and delivered across Ireland.
Red Cedar Batten Sizes
All our cedar battens are 18 mm thick with eased edges, so they’re comfortable to touch and finish neatly. The width decides the look of the screen:
- The narrow 44×18 mm (2×1) slat makes a fine, contemporary screen with close shadow lines.
- The 94×18 mm (4×1) batten is the classic slatted fence and screen board.
- The wider 144×18 mm (6×1) board suits bolder horizontal fencing and cladding.
- The 194×18 mm (8×1) board is the widest, for a near solid screen with a simple, modern line.
Why Choose Cedar Timber
- Durability Class 2: naturally resistant to rot, insect attack and fungal decay, with no chemical treatment.
- Very light: around 380 kg/m³, so long battens are easy to lift, cut and fix.
- Stable, clear grain: the top grade has few knots and stays straight on an open slatted screen.
- Colour: a warm honey brown that suits contemporary gardens.
Building a Cedar Slatted Screen
- Fix battens to a frame of posts and rails, with a consistent gap between slats. A spacer block makes the gaps even.
- Use stainless steel ringshank nails or screws only. The tannins in cedar react with galvanised and mild steel and leave dark streaks.
- Pre-drill near the ends to stop the battens splitting.

Oiling Cedar Battens
Cedar doesn’t need treating to last, but it silvers within the first year, so most people oil it to keep the honey brown. Use a UV protective oil made for cedar and refresh it every two or three years. Avoid paint, varnish and general purpose stains, which cedar’s oily surface repels. See our wood oils and stains.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cedar Fence Battens
What grade is your cedar?
Our cedar battens are Western Red Cedar, graded Clear Heart Vertical Grain, the highest commercial grade available.
What sizes do cedar battens come in?
All are 18 mm thick with an ease edge. Choose from 44×18 mm (2×1), 94×18 mm (4×1), and wider 144×18 mm and 194×18 mm boards. Choose the length on the product page; longer battens mean fewer joints on long runs.
What nails or screws should I use on cedar?
Stainless steel ringshank nails or screws only. Never use galvanised or mild steel, because the tannins in cedar react with them and leave dark streaks. Pre-drill near the ends to prevent splitting.
Can I paint or stain cedar battens?
Avoid film forming paint, varnish and general purpose stain, because cedar’s oily surface repels them and they flake within a couple of seasons. Cedar doesn’t need treating to last, but it silvers, so most people use a UV protective oil made for cedar to keep the honey brown, refreshed every two or three years. See our wood oils and stains.
Are cedar slats the same as cedar battens?
Yes. Our cedar slats and cedar battens are the same Western Red Cedar boards, 18 mm thick with eased edges in 44, 94, 144 and 194 mm widths. Slat is the usual name on a fence or screen and batten on cladding or framing, so you can order either use from this page.
