What Ecowood decking is
Ecowood is the name we give our kiln-dried Red Class softwood. Red Class is the reddish, resin-rich grade of softwood, and kiln drying brings each board to a predictable moisture content, so the deck stays flat and stable once it is screwed down. The boards arrive in a warm honey-brown tone with an even grain, and with proper care Ecowood has a service life of 25 years and beyond.
If you want timber decking that looks and feels like proper wood without the cost of hardwood, Ecowood is where most people start.
Ecowood decking board sizes
Every Ecowood decking board has the same 145×28 mm section and a smooth face on both sides, so the only choice is the length, which you pick on the product page. Go for the length that divides best into your deck, because fewer cuts mean less waste:
- Shorter boards: for small decks, steps and landings where short boards are easier to handle.
- Mid-length boards: the all-round choice for a typical garden deck.
- Longer boards: for long runs, so a wide deck can be laid with fewer joins, or none.
Enter your deck area in the calculator on the product page and it works out how many boards you need; the cart adds the fixings and extras.
Why choose Ecowood decking
At around 520 kg/m³, Ecowood is light enough to carry single-handed but solid enough to feel like real timber underfoot. The quality is consistent from board to board, so a finished deck looks even without sorting through a pack. It is easy to cut and fix, which makes it a good choice for a first DIY deck as well as a trade job.
Ecowood vs other timber decking
Ecowood is the value choice in our timber decking range. If you are weighing it up against the alternatives:
- Cedar decking: naturally durable Western Red Cedar in a thicker 40 mm board, for a premium deck.
- Yellow Balau decking: a dense tropical hardwood for the hardest-wearing surface.
- MicroShades decking: treated softwood that arrives factory finished, so there is no oiling before you use it.
Installing Ecowood decking
Lay Ecowood on a level, well ventilated frame from our decking substructures range:
- Space the joists at a maximum of 400 mm centres for a residential deck, or 300 mm or less where the deck will carry heavier loads.
- Fix with A2 or A4 stainless steel screws, and pre-drill near the board ends to prevent splitting.
- Leave a small gap between boards so rain drains through and the deck dries quickly.
Screws, clips and edge trims are in our decking accessories. Expect slight colour variation between boards, which is part of the natural character of the timber.
Looking after Ecowood decking
Ecowood doesn’t need treating before you lay it, but left bare it weathers to silver grey over 12 to 18 months. Most people oil it within the first few months to keep the honey-brown colour, then give it a fresh coat every year or two. A UV protective decking oil from our exterior oils and stains keeps the colour and helps the boards shed water. Sweep off leaves regularly so the surface dries quickly.
Ecowood is one of several species in our timber decking range, stocked in our warehouse and delivered across Ireland.
Frequently Asked Questions About Ecowood Decking
What is Ecowood?
Ecowood is our own brand of kiln-dried Red Class softwood. Kiln drying gives every board a predictable moisture content, so it stays stable on site, and the quality is consistent from one board to the next. It gives you the feel of a premium softwood at a price below hardwood.
What size is Ecowood decking?
Ecowood decking boards are 145×28 mm, smooth on both faces. Choose the length on the product page; longer boards mean fewer joints on long runs, while shorter ones are easier to handle on steps and small decks.
Does Ecowood decking need treatment?
Ecowood is ready to lay straight from the pack, but left bare it weathers to silver grey over 12 to 18 months. Most people keep the warm honey tone with a UV protective oil made for softwood, applied within the first few months and refreshed every year or two. See our oils and stains.
How do I fix Ecowood decking?
Use stainless steel A2 or A4 fixings and pre-drill near the board ends to prevent splitting. At around 520 kg/m³ the boards are light enough to handle single-handed but still feel like solid timber.
