Wooden Gates We Stock
Choose the gate to match the fence it sits in.
English Chestnut Gate
A cleft sweet chestnut gate for rural boundaries, paddocks, kitchen gardens and driveways. It comes with two matching chestnut posts and a full fitting kit of hinges, latch and fixings, so there is nothing else to source. It pairs with our chestnut paling fencing.
Joyce Ecowood Garden Gate Set
A single door gate in planed, impregnated Ecowood boards, for side passages and garden entrances. It is 1950 mm high and 1000 mm wide, made from 140 x 16 mm boards screwed to a 19 mm frame, and it arrives with a cylinder lock, spigots, a stainless steel door fitting and a suspension eye, so you have everything you need to hang it. It matches our Ecowood fencing panels.
Hardwood Premium Garden Gate Kit
A planed hardwood gate for a boundary you want to last, 1000 mm wide and 1950 mm high, with 140 x 14 mm boards screwed to an iron frame. It comes with the cylinder lock, spigots, stainless steel door fitting and suspension eye to hang it, and it sits alongside our hardwood fence panels. Order the matching hardwood gate frame with it.
Black-Stained Garden Gate
A black-stained pine gate in a black steel frame, 1000 mm wide and 1950 mm high, that arrives complete with the lock, handles and adjustable hinges. It is made to hang in a run of our black spruce fence panels, the Behan and Maud. Order the black gate frame with it.
Gate Frames
A gate frame stops a gate rattling, sagging or blowing open in the wind, because the door closes against a stop instead of swinging on its hinges alone. It’s also the easiest way to hang a gate between concrete posts.
The Joyce Ecowood gate frame is impregnated spruce with a stop beam, 2100 mm high and 1500 mm wide, made to go with the Joyce gate. The black gate frame is black pine with a built in door stop. It stands 2100 mm high and can be cut down to 2000 or 1800 mm, and you set the width anywhere from 900 to 1500 mm, so it suits most garden openings.
The hardwood gate frame is planed 88 x 44 mm hardwood with a built in stop beam, 2100 mm high, and you set the width anywhere from 900 to 1500 mm. It is the surround for the hardwood gate kit, which comes without a frame.
Hanging a Garden Gate
- Concrete the posts in and let them set fully before you hang the gate.
- Measure between the posts at the top and the bottom. They should match to within a few millimetres.
- Leave a gap of about 50 mm under the gate so it swings freely over soft winter ground or gravel.
- Use stainless steel or galvanised fittings, and oil the hinges and latch once a year.
Composite Gates
For a gate that matches a composite fence, see the gates in our PuraFence Classic and PuraFence Royal ranges.
Oiling Timber Gates
Chestnut, Ecowood and hardwood gates don’t need treating to last, but bare timber weathers to silver grey. Most people oil their gate to keep its warm colour and help it shed water. Use a penetrating exterior oil or a breathable stain rather than a varnish. See our wood oils and stains.
For posts, rails and the rest of the fixings, browse all our fencing accessories.
Choose a gate to match the rest of your garden fence panels. Composite gates in every PuraFence colour sit with our composite fence panels.
Frequently Asked Questions About Garden Gates
Which garden gates do you stock?
We stock an English chestnut gate supplied with matching posts and a fitting kit, and the Joyce Ecowood garden gate set with its lock and fittings. Matching composite gates are on the PuraFence Classic and PuraFence Royal pages.
Do you sell composite gates?
Yes. Composite gates are part of our PuraFence Classic and PuraFence Royal fencing ranges, so they match the boards and posts exactly. A composite gate hangs on two H profile posts set at gate spacing, and adding the gate and posts to your cart gives you the full total.
What comes with the chestnut gate?
The chestnut gate arrives with two matching chestnut posts, hinges, latch and fixings, so there is nothing else to source. Concrete the posts in, let them set properly before hanging, and leave a small gap under the gate so it swings freely over soft winter ground.
What size is the Joyce Ecowood gate and what is included?
It is a single door, 1950 mm high and 1000 mm wide, made from planed, impregnated Ecowood boards. It comes with a cylinder lock, spigots, stainless steel door fitting and a suspension eye.
Does a chestnut gate need treating?
It doesn’t need treating to last, because sweet chestnut’s natural tannins protect it. Left bare, it weathers to silver grey, so most people oil it to keep the warmer tone. Use a penetrating exterior oil or breathable stain, not a film forming varnish, and oil the hinges once a year. See our wood oils and stains.
