MicroShades Fencing
MicroShades fencing is built from factory-finished treated softwood slats, for slatted fences, garden screens and privacy panels that are ready to put up the day they arrive. Choose the wide 94×18 mm slat for solid screening, or the narrow 44×18 mm slat for fine-lined designs, spacers and trim. Both have eased edges and the protective finish already applied, so there is no treating on site. Stocked in our warehouse and delivered across Ireland.

MicroShades Fencing in Ireland
MicroShades fencing takes the slowest part of building a timber screen off your hands. Every slat is treated softwood that leaves the factory with its protective finish already applied, so you skip the brushing, drying and second coats that eat up a weekend. The boards arrive in a consistent tone and go up looking finished from day one.
The treatment penetrates into the timber rather than sitting on the surface, and the range carries a service life of 20 years and beyond. That makes MicroShades timber a practical choice for long runs of horizontal fencing, garden screens, bin stores and boundary panels where you want an even, finished look without the wait.
MicroShades slat sizes
Both slats are planed to 18 mm thick with eased edges, which feel smooth in the hand and give the screen a crisp shadow line. The wide 94×18 mm slat is the main screening board, covering height quickly for privacy fences and solid-looking panels. The narrow 44×18 mm slat is for fine-lined contemporary screens, spacers between wide boards, or trim and capping along the top.
Choose the length on the product page; longer boards mean fewer joints on long runs. Enter your area in the calculator on the product page and it works out how many you need; the cart adds the fixings and extras.
MicroShades slats vs other timber slats
MicroShades is the ready-finished option in our timber slats range. The other species suit shoppers who want a natural timber they finish themselves:
- Cedar fence battens: a warm honey-coloured timber for the most refined finish.
- Larch slats: dense, resinous larch with a characterful reddish brown grain.
- Ecowood battens: kiln-dried Red Class softwood for a consistent natural look.
MicroShades battens and slats are the same boards, so the profiles here also work as MicroShades battens for framing and batten cladding.
Putting up MicroShades slats
Because the finish is already on, installing MicroShades is purely a fixing job. A few habits keep the screen looking sharp:
- Use stainless steel A2 or A4 screws outdoors, so no rust stains bleed into the finish.
- Pre-drill near the ends of each slat to stop splitting.
- Seal every cut end before fixing, so the protective treatment stays continuous along the whole slat.
- Leave an even gap of a few millimetres between slats for drainage and airflow.
- Stand posts in concrete post bases to keep the timber clear of wet ground.
Looking after MicroShades slats
MicroShades slats don’t need treating when you put them up, but sun and rain slowly soften any exterior finish. A refresh coat every two or three years keeps the colour deep and the protection even, and it takes far less time than finishing bare timber. Clean the slats with a soft brush and water first, let them dry, then apply a coat from our exterior oils and stains range.

Frequently Asked Questions About MicroShades Fencing
Do MicroShades slats need treating after installation?
No. MicroShades slats arrive factory-finished with the protective treatment already applied, so they are ready to install from day one. Seal any cut ends as you go, and plan a refresh coat every two or three years from our exterior oils and stains to keep the colour deep.
How long do MicroShades slats last?
MicroShades is a treated softwood range with a service life of 20 years and beyond. A refresh coat every two or three years with a matching maintenance product keeps the colour depth and protection consistent across the whole screen.
What should I do when I cut a MicroShades slat?
Reseal any exposed end grain with a touch-up sealer after cutting, so the protective treatment stays continuous along the whole slat. Do this before fixing, while the end is easy to reach.
What sizes are MicroShades slats?
MicroShades slats come in two face sizes, 44 mm x 18 mm and 94 mm x 18 mm, both with eased edges and the finish already applied. Use the wide slat for privacy and the narrow one for fine-lined screens, spacers or trim.
Are MicroShades battens the same as MicroShades slats?
Yes. MicroShades battens and slats are the same factory-finished treated softwood boards, 94×18 mm and 44×18 mm with eased edges. Slat is the usual name on a fence or screen and batten for framing or cladding, so you can order either use from this page.
