Sauna Cladding
Sauna cladding is the timber that lines the walls and ceiling of a sauna, and our range covers natural alder tongue and groove boards, thermally modified Ayous and Thermo Spruce in a triple slatted profile. Alder is 89×15 mm, Ayous is 129×21 mm (working width) and Thermo Spruce is 140×26 mm. All are stocked in our warehouse and delivered across Ireland.

Sauna Cladding for Sale in Ireland
The cladding is the surface you see and feel in a sauna. It has to cope with dry heat, steam and constant changes in humidity, and on the walls you lean against it has to stay comfortable on bare skin. This page gathers every sauna wall board we stock, so you can compare the smooth, traditional look of alder with the lined texture of a triple slatted board.
Types of sauna cladding
The choice comes down to the look you want and where the board goes in the room. Choose the length on the product page; longer boards mean fewer joints on a long wall. When you order, the cart adds the matching extras.
Alder tongue and groove cladding
Alder sauna wood is the traditional choice for the hot room: an 89×15 mm tongue and groove board sized for the walls and ceilings. It is effectively resin free, so it won’t weep pitch as the room heats, and its low density keeps it gentle to lean against. The profile self aligns as you fix it, for a tidy, gap free wall.
Ayous triple slatted cladding
Ayous sauna cladding is thermally modified with steam at over 200 degrees, making it durable and dimensionally stable. It is a bigger board than the alder, with a 129×21 mm working width, and the triple slatted face gives feature walls a fine, lined texture.
Thermo Spruce triple slatted cladding
Thermo Spruce sauna cladding has the same triple slatted look in a heavier 140×26 mm board. It is light and easy to work, for sauna and feature walls.
Installing sauna cladding
Good preparation keeps a sauna wall straight and dry:
- Let the boards acclimatise in the room for a day or two before fixing.
- Keep a ventilated cavity behind the boards and a small gap at floor and ceiling.
- Fix alder through the tongue with stainless steel pins or clips, because ordinary nails corrode and leave rust marks.
- Pre drill Ayous and fix it with stainless steel nails or screws.
- Finish external and internal corners with matching alder trims from our sauna accessories.
Finishing sauna cladding
Never use varnish, lacquer, paint or exterior wood finishes on sauna walls, because they aren’t made for sustained heat and release fumes when warm. Most customers protect walls and ceilings with Saunawood Protection Wax, a tinted, water based coating that resists moisture, dirt and mould. For the seats, see sauna bench boards.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sauna Cladding
What is the best cladding for a sauna?
Alder is the traditional choice for the hot room. It is effectively resin free, so it won’t weep pitch as the room heats, and its low density keeps it comfortable to lean against. Triple slatted Ayous and Thermo Spruce suit feature walls.
How much sauna cladding do I need?
Measure the wall and ceiling area and allow around 15 per cent extra for cutting waste. The calculator on each product page turns your measurements into a board count.
How do I fix sauna cladding?
Let the boards acclimatise for a day or two, keep a ventilated cavity behind them and fix with stainless steel. Alder is fixed through the tongue with pins or clips; Ayous should always be pre drilled.
What finish goes on sauna walls?
Only a sauna specific finish. Saunawood Protection Wax is a tinted, water based coating for walls and ceilings that resists moisture, dirt and mould. Never use varnish, paint or exterior wood finishes in a hot room.
