Frequently Asked Questions
Which oil should I use on hardwood decking?
Owatrol Deks Olje D1 is a saturating oil developed for dense, oily woods that are hard to penetrate, such as tropical hardwoods and oak. It soaks in rather than forming a film, so it won’t peel or crack, and leaves a clear matt finish.
How do I bring grey, weathered decking back to colour?
Clean it with Owatrol Net-Trol, which restores greyed wood to its natural colour in as little as 15 minutes without sanding. Then protect it with Textrol, a penetrating oil developed for weathered wood, applied in coats wet-on-wet until the wood takes no more.
How do I strip an old stain off my deck?
Owatrol Prepdeck removes old solid and semi-transparent stains, grade stamps and mill glaze from soft and hardwoods. You must neutralise the surface straight afterwards with Net-Trol, otherwise it can react with the new finish.
What should I put on brand-new timber decking?
Owatrol Seasonite protects unfinished new wood through its first year, controlling moisture to reduce splitting, warping and cupping. It lets the wood weather naturally, ready for an oil or stain after six to twelve months. It is not for oak or for wood that is already weathered.
Do you have coloured or black decking oil?
Yes. WOCA Exterior Wood Oil comes in Black, Anthracite, Thunder Grey, Teak and Hazelnut, and Owatrol Textrol in Clear, Golden Oak, Rustic Oak and Weathered Grey. Pigmented tones carry more UV protection than a clear oil, because the pigment itself blocks the sun.
Do I need to oil composite decking?
No. Composite decking never needs oiling, staining or sealing; a wash with warm water and a brush is all it needs. These oils are for timber decking.
