Fence Oils and Stains
Fence oils and stains protect a timber fence from rain and sun while keeping, or changing, its colour. We stock penetrating oils from Owatrol, Osmo and WOCA in clear finishes and in tints from Golden Oak and Teak to Weathered Grey, Anthracite and Black. None of them form a film, so they will not crack, peel or flake, and timber lasts longest and keeps its colour when it is oiled. Stocked in our warehouse and delivered across Ireland.

Tinted or Clear Fence Oil?
Start with the look you want. A clear oil keeps the timber’s own colour and grain, while a tinted fence stain adds colour, and in the WOCA range the pigments themselves carry the UV protection that holds it against the sun. Clear suits good looking timber you want to see; a tint suits a fence you want to smarten up, match to a house or make disappear into the planting.
- Osmo UV Protection Oil: made for vertical structures such as fences, highly water and dirt resistant, and Osmo says it delays natural greying by 12 times compared with untreated wood. In Clear or a Light Cedar tint, applied in two coats.
- Owatrol Textrol: a penetrating oil developed for weathered wood, with a mildew resistant finish. In Clear, Golden Oak, Rustic Oak and Weathered Grey, it goes on a rich matt colour that softens over time to its finished look.
- WOCA Exterior Oil: a water based, quick drying, low odour oil with a matte finish. In Teak, Hazelnut, Thunder Grey, Anthracite and Black, its pigments help shield the wood from moss and algae.
- Owatrol Deks Olje D1: a very thin clear saturating oil for dense, oily hardwoods that ordinary oils struggle to get into.
Oil or Fence Paint?
Many people reach for fence paint, but on outdoor timber a film of paint or varnish tends to crack, peel and trap moisture underneath. A tinted oil gives you the colour of a paint with none of that: it soaks into the wood, protects it from within, and lets the grain show through. When it needs a refresh you simply clean and recoat, with no scraping or sanding.
Choosing a Colour for Your Fence
Dark tints such as Anthracite, Black and Thunder Grey give a modern, clean backdrop that makes planting stand out. Warm tints like Teak, Golden Oak and Light Cedar keep a traditional timber look, and Weathered Grey gives a new fence the silvered character of an old one without waiting years. Try the colour on a hidden corner first so you see it on your own timber.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fence Oils and Stains
What is a good clear oil for a fence?
Osmo UV Protection Oil Clear is made for vertical structures, is highly water and dirt resistant and delays natural greying compared with untreated wood. Owatrol Textrol Clear is a penetrating, non-film-forming oil with UV protection that will not crack, peel or flake.
What colours of fence oil do you stock?
Textrol comes in Clear, Weathered Grey, Rustic Oak and Golden Oak. WOCA Exterior Oil comes in Teak, Hazelnut, Thunder Grey, Anthracite and Black, and Osmo UV Protection Oil comes in Clear and a Light Cedar tint.
How much fence oil do I need?
Osmo UV Protection Oil covers roughly 18 m² per litre per coat, with two coats recommended. WOCA Exterior Oil covers roughly 12 to 15 m² per litre. Measure both faces of your fence and keep a little spare for touch-ups.
How do I bring a grey, weathered fence back to colour?
Clean it with Owatrol Net-Trol, which restores greyed wood to its natural colour in about 15 minutes without bleaching and is safe around plants. Then protect it with a penetrating oil such as Textrol, which is developed for weathered wood.
How do I remove an old stain before oiling?
Use Owatrol Prepdeck to strip old solid and semi-transparent stains. You must neutralise the surface straight afterwards with Net-Trol to prevent a reaction with the new coating.
Which oil suits dense hardwood fencing?
Owatrol Deks Olje D1 is a thin saturating oil developed for dense, oily and difficult-to-impregnate woods. On tropical hardwoods, degreasing with Net-Trol first helps the oil penetrate.
