Wisa Spruce Special Plywood
WISA Spruce is the structural softwood plywood that punches well above its weight. A smooth, strong, light-yet-rigid panel with a superior surface finish, it’s the go-to for load-bearing structures where weight matters as much as strength. At 18 mm, you have the cabinet-thickness workhorse that handles structural work and finished interior detail equally well. We stock it in our yard in Dublin, ready for fast delivery anywhere in Ireland.
Why WISA Spruce plywood?
WISA Spruce is built from cross-laminated spruce veneers, which is what gives the panel its excellent strength-to-weight ratio: rigid enough for load-bearing roofs and walls, light enough that you can handle full sheets without a second person. The face is noticeably smoother and more refined than other softwood plywoods, which is why it ends up in shop fittings, joinery, furniture and DIY work as well as in pure structural use.
The panel is certified to EN 314-2 CPD, the bond-performance classification covered under the European Construction Products Directive, with a Class 3 bond rating, which is the highest service class for plywood: suitable for full external weather exposure. The FSC certification means the timber comes from forests independently audited under the Forest Stewardship Council, the most widely recognised forest certification system globally. So you’re getting a panel that’s structurally rated for the worst conditions plywood is rated for, and verified to come from a responsible source on top of that.
Working with the sheet
At 18 mm, use a sharp TCT blade with a high tooth count for clean cross-cuts. Spruce ply cuts cleaner than denser hardwood plywood, but a fine blade still gives the best edge on the face veneer. Pre-drill before fixing close to an edge, and stagger joints across joists or studs for the strongest structural assembly.
Store the sheets flat and off the ground. Although the panel is rated for full external exposure, the longest service life comes from protecting the face from prolonged direct weather and sealing any cut edges before installing.
Finishing
The smooth, refined face takes finish unusually well for a softwood plywood. For natural-look work, a clear hardwax oil or water-based lacquer warms the face up and protects the surface; for painted work, prime first with a wood primer (the open softwood grain will otherwise drink ordinary paint). For external exposure, use a high-build exterior primer and a quality exterior topcoat or a marine varnish for the longest service life.
