Standard MDF Sheet
If you need a flat, knot-free panel that paints, machines and sands beautifully, Standard MDF is the workshop default. At 12 mm, you have a versatile sheet for cabinet backs, drawer sides, light shelving, panelling and routed door fronts, with a surface so smooth it takes finish straight off the press. We stock the full range across the popular sheet sizes in our yard in Dublin, ready for fast delivery anywhere in Ireland.
Why Standard MDF?
Standard MDF is the panel that quietly does the work behind most of the joinery, shopfitting, and cabinetry around you. The fibres are far finer than chipboard particles, which gives you a denser core, a sharper machined edge, and a surface so smooth it takes paint and primer better than almost any other board on the market. Free of natural defects, it gives you predictable working from sheet to sheet with no knots, splits or hidden voids to spoil a routed profile.
This is a high-quality MDF board (L-MDF according to EN 622-5) with a hard, fine and smoothly sanded surface, intended for non-load-bearing applications in dry conditions. On indoor air quality, it carries the E1 low-formaldehyde classification, which is the European limit that lets a panel be used safely inside homes, schools and offices. It also meets the requirements of the California Air Resource Board (CARB Phase 2) and the EPA’s Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA Title VI), the two strictest formaldehyde standards in the world, so if your project is being specified to North American standards or to any client with strict indoor-air requirements, this panel will pass on paper as well as in practice. FSC-certified stock is available on request.
You’ll see it across wardrobe interiors, decorative wall panels, skirting and architrave, kitchen carcasses, exhibition stands, speaker enclosures, signage and CNC-routed detail. The dense uniform core also gives you superior holding for screws and fasteners, which matters when you’re loading a carcass or hanging a heavy panel.
Working with the sheet
At 12 mm, this is the mid-range sheet for cabinet backs, drawer sides, light shelving, panelling, and routed door fronts. Use a sharp TCT blade with a high tooth count for clean cross-cuts, and always pre-drill before screwing close to an edge to prevent splitting the core.
MDF dust is fine and should be cut with extraction or outdoors. Wear a P2 or P3 mask. Keep sheets flat and dry until installation, because if they get wet the core swells permanently. For wet rooms, bathrooms, or any humid environment, specify Moisture Resistant MDF instead. We stock the full range.
Finishing
Standard MDF takes finish exceptionally well, and that’s half its appeal. It can be finished with varnish, or with either oil-based or water-based paints. Most of our customers prime the face with a dedicated MDF primer before topcoating, because the edges are far more absorbent than the face and will drink ordinary paint unevenly. Two coats of MDF primer, sanded between, then any topcoat in the sheen level you want. Avoid water-based paints applied directly without primer, since the moisture lifts the fibres and gives you a fuzzy finish. For veneering, the face accepts contact adhesive and PVA cleanly; for laminate, use a high-quality contact bond. Ask us if you’re unsure which finish to pair with your application, and we’ll point you to what works.
