Hardwood Timber Joist
A deep hardwood joist gives your deck a frame as hard wearing as the boards on top of it. At 190×45 mm this is the main joist in our hardwood range, made for longer spans and raised decks, and it is planed all over (PAO), so every face is smooth and square. That makes it easier to set out level, fix accurately and use where the frame will be on show. It is stocked in our warehouse for delivery across Ireland, ready to go under hardwood or composite decking.
Why a hardwood joist?
The substructure is the part of a deck you cannot easily replace once the boards are down, so it pays to build it from timber that lasts. Dense hardwood has natural oils and a tight grain that resist rot, insects and fungal decay without chemical treatment, which makes it a natural partner for a hardwood deck where you want the frame to last as long as the boards.
Because the joist is planed rather than sawn, it also works well where the frame is visible: around the edge of a raised deck, on steps, or in pergola and screen work. The clean faces take a fixing neatly and give a crisp line where a sawn joist would look rough.
Installation guidance
Get the spacing right and the deck above performs for years. Set joists at a maximum of 400 mm centres for residential decking and 300 mm or less for heavier loads, and give the frame a slight fall of about 1:80 so water drains away. Use joist hangers or post anchors with stainless steel fixings rated for the load.
A joist this deep is heavy, so plan your lifts. Dense hardwood needs a pilot hole for every fixing, both to stop the joist splitting and to stop screws shearing as they go in. Seal any cuts and notches with an end grain preservative to keep moisture out of the exposed grain.
Finishing & maintenance
Under a deck, most joists are simply left bare, and that is what most of our customers choose. Where the frame is on show you have two good routes. Leave it untreated and it fades to an even silver grey over its first year, or hold its colour with a hardwood oil made for dense hardwoods, applied within the first few months and refreshed every year or two. We stock suitable hardwood oils with our decking finishes. Avoid film forming paint, varnish or general purpose stain, which will not bond properly to the dense surface. Clearing leaves and debris from between the joists keeps the frame dry and ventilated.
