Smooth hardwood face that takes oil, lacquer or paint cleanly; the layered edge looks the part on show
Cross-grain birch construction stays flat, resists warping, and holds screws and fixings reliably
Meets EN 13986 and EN 314-2; bonded to a graded standard for predictable performance
Suits a wide range of interior work: furniture, cabinetry, shop fitting, drawer boxes, signage, toys
Face veneer can chip on cross-cuts without a sharp blade and proper support beneath the cut
Best kept dry; not intended for sustained wet or exterior exposure

9 mm birch plywood is the standard choice for drawer boxes, and the reason is simple: you can drive a screw into the edge of the board and it holds. Very few sheet materials this thin will do that.
Drawer boxes, mostly. Seven layers of birch give an edge solid enough to take a screw at full depth without splitting, so drawer runners fix straight to the outside of the box, the bottom sits in a groove, the corners take a rebated or housed joint, and the result stays square under a heavy load. The same thing applies anywhere a part has to be fixed through its thickness rather than through its face: dividers inside a cabinet, jig fences, small partitions and workshop fittings. At 9 mm you are not losing much space inside and you can still screw into it.
Cutting and handling
Cut with a fine toothed blade, good face upwards, and score the line first on any edge that will be seen. Grooves cut cleanly at this thickness: take them in two passes rather than one deep one and the width stays truer, which matters when a drawer bottom has to slide in.
Fixing and painting
Pilot every screw that goes into an edge, and drill the hole to the full depth of the thread rather than just through the first layer, with a hole slightly narrower than the screw shank. The damage a missing pilot causes is not a split you can see: it is a glue line opened up inside the board that lets go months later.
Where not to use it
It will not bend to a curve in any useful way, so treat it as a flat panel board and use 4 mm where you need a radius. It is an interior board too, so drawer boxes for a bathroom want marine plywood, and a groove cut in birch will swell if it gets damp. The full range is on the birch plywood page, with the other grades on the plywood page.
