Pros and cons
Solid construction provides the weight, stiffness, and acoustic feel of a real timber deck rather than a hollow alternative
Refined grain surface is the more restrained of the two grain choices, suiting contemporary design without losing timber reference
Sandstone holds its tone evenly across the broader solid-board surface
Edges and ends can be milled, ripped, or routed with timber-like confidence; matched bullnose available for a softened profile
Heavier than hollow composite; handling and substructure planning need to allow for the extra weight
Solid material costs more per square metre than hollow profiles, reflecting the higher material content and resulting feel underfoot

Puraboard Solid Composite Decking, Refined Grain
Puraboard is the premium tier of the composite decking range. A fully solid plank rather than a hollow-chambered one, with a refined grain surface, the more restrained of the two grain textures in the range, with the substance, weight, and feel of a solid timber board. Underfoot it walks like hardwood; cut, milled, or routed it works like hardwood; in service it carries the long-term composite credentials that make hardwood unattractive in a wet climate.
Sandstone is a soft, pale warm-cream tone, the natural choice when grey reads too cool. It sits quietly against rendered walls, pale brick, and stone-paved surrounds, and holds its brightness on the overcast days that make up much of the Irish year.
Why solid?
Solid composite is denser and stiffer than hollow alternatives. There is no acoustic ring underfoot, no risk of chamber damage from a sharp impact, and no awkwardness at exposed edges; the board can be ripped, milled, or shaped in the same way as a solid timber plank, and finished without trim sleeves. The refined grain surface suits contemporary design without losing the timber reference, with a finer texture than the rustic grain alternative.
Where it makes sense
Puraboard is the right specification when the deck has to feel substantial rather than just look right. Outdoor dining areas, courtyards close to bedroom windows, and decks where exposed edges form part of the design all benefit from the solid section. Sandstone works well here for both its visual character and its even tone across the broader board surface.
Installation guidance
The board is heavier than hollow composite, so handling and substructure planning should account for the additional weight. Joists at 350 mm centres or tighter, hidden clips, with proper expansion gaps. Face-fixing with pre-drilled and screwed fixings is also straightforward thanks to the solid section. Detailed steps, joist tables, and edge-finishing options are in the Puraboard installation manual.
Care & maintenance
Wash with warm water and a soft brush. Avoid pressure-washing on full power, which can mark the grain texture over time. Sandstone is forgiving in everyday use and shows water marks predictably for its tone. The Puraboard care guide details approved cleaning products.
Complete the deck
Matching Puraboard bullnose edge boards and fascia in Sandstone are listed in the related products at the bottom of this page. Specifying the deck, bullnose, and fascia together gives a unified finish across exposed steps, edges, and visible perimeter.
