Fire rated oak veneered MDF is 19 mm thick, with real crown cut white oak on both faces over a fire retardant core. It is the board for a fit out where the finish has to be timber and the specification has to be met.
That combination is the whole point of it. In hotels, schools, hospitals, stairwells and escape routes a designer wants an oak face and the building consent wants a reaction to fire class, and ordinarily those two pull against each other. Here you get both in one panel, in a sheet long enough to take a full storey height without a cross joint through the grain.
Cutting and handling
At 50.8 kg over three metres this is a two person sheet, so plan the route before it arrives. Carry it on edge, never drag it, and score the veneer along the line before the main pass, because a scratch or a torn edge on an oak face cannot be sanded out. The core is denser than standard MDF and will take the edge off a blade sooner. Extraction and a P2 or P3 mask.
Fixing and painting
Pilot drill and use coarse threaded MDF screws, with dowels or a mechanical fitting under load. Lip exposed edges in solid oak, fit the lipping before final sanding, and sand to 180 or 240 grit only. Check the finish you intend to use against the fire specification before you apply it: the classification belongs to the whole build up, and a heavy combustible coating or a bonded laminate can take the assembly out of class even though the panel itself is rated.
Where not to use it
It is a dry interior, non load bearing board, and reaction to fire is not the same as fire resistance, so read which one the specification is asking for. Where no rating is required the standard long sheet costs considerably less.
