Ecowood Ease Edge Batten & Screen
Ecowood gives you the predictable quality of a premium softwood without the price tag of hardwood. It is our brand of kiln-dried Red Class timber, supplied with consistent quality from one board to the next and ready to fix straight from the pack. This Ease Edge batten is 140×16 mm, a wide face on a slim section for slatted fences and garden screens, and it arrives in a warm honey brown tone with an even grain. Stocked in our warehouse for delivery across Ireland.
Why Ecowood?
Kiln drying brings every board to a predictable moisture content, so your battens stay stable on site and the gaps in a screen stay even from one season to the next. Red Class is the reddish, resin-rich grade of softwood, and when it is properly looked after you can expect a service life of 25 years and beyond outdoors. At around 520 kg/m³ it is light enough to handle on your own, yet it still feels like proper timber.
The Ease Edge profile has slightly rounded long edges, which take the sharpness off the board and suit both vertical screen panels and horizontal batten fencing. The 140 mm face gives a bold, modern rhythm in shadow gap screening, while the 16 mm depth keeps the weight on your frame down. Left untreated, Ecowood weathers to a soft silver grey, which many designers choose deliberately.
Installation guidance
Ecowood is straightforward to fix with standard woodworking tools. Pre-drill at every fixing point, and always within 50 mm of a board end, because a slim 16 mm board can split if a screw is forced. Use stainless steel A2 or A4 fixings outdoors so the timber does not stain around the screw heads.
Leave a gap of 5 to 8 mm between boards in a vertical screen to allow for natural movement. Fix to a treated or naturally durable frame, since the battens will only last as long as the structure behind them. On exposed sites, screw-fix rather than clip-fix so the slim boards stay secure in strong wind.
Finishing & maintenance
You have two good options with Ecowood, and neither is a compromise. The natural route leaves the boards untreated to silver over twelve to eighteen months, and most of our customers choose it for screens because it needs the least effort. The preserved route keeps the warm honey tone with a penetrating exterior oil, applied within the first few months and refreshed every two or three years. We stock suitable oils alongside the battens.
Avoid film-forming varnishes and gloss paints, which crack and peel as the timber moves outdoors. Whichever route you choose, a sweep with a soft brush and a low pressure rinse once a year keeps the surface looking its best.
