Sapele

Sapele is the timber to specify when you want the look of mahogany at a price that still works on a real budget. Sapele (Entandrophragma cylindricum) gives you a warm reddish brown that darkens beautifully with age, a fine even texture that machines and finishes cleanly, and quarter sawn faces carrying the ribbon stripe figure that made mahogany famous. It is durability class 3, so it is a strong choice for windows, external doors and conservatory joinery where the work is painted or oiled, and an excellent one for internal furniture and panelling. Imported from West and Central Africa and stocked in our yard for delivery across Ireland in thicknesses from 26 to 75 mm, kiln dried, with FSC and PEFC certified supply available on request. Why Sapele?

It is stable, it is available in genuinely wide clear boards, and it holds a crisp arris better than most timbers of its price, which is exactly what a moulded sash or a raised panel door needs. For joinery shops it has been the standard window timber for decades because it takes paint well, glues reliably and does not fight the machine.

The catch is the same interlocked grain that gives you the ribbon stripe. Plane it in the wrong direction and it tears out, particularly on a quartered face where the fibre direction reverses every few millimetres. Sharp tooling, a light finishing cut and a scraper rather than a plane on the final pass will get you a surface that needs almost no sanding. It is worth knowing before you cut into an expensive board, not after.

Installation guidance

At 8 to 12 percent moisture content this is ready for internal work as delivered, though a week acclimatising in the building is never wasted. For external joinery, allow the sections a little more generosity than you would in softwood and make sure end grain on cills and rails is sealed before assembly, because that is where water gets in and where class 3 durability starts to matter.

Pre drill near ends and edges. Sapele is moderately hard and splits rather than yielding. Use stainless fixings on anything external or anything that will get damp.

Finishing & maintenance

Two sensible routes. Oil or hardwax it and you keep the depth and the ribbon figure visible, with a coat every year or two outside and rarely inside. Or paint external joinery, which is what most sapele windows in Ireland actually get, and which protects the timber properly while hiding the grain entirely. Most of our customers oil internal work and paint anything facing the weather.

Avoid single coat gloss paint straight onto bare sapele and avoid yacht varnish outdoors: both crack and let water sit behind the film. Prime properly with a flexible microporous system if you are painting. We stock the finishes that suit sapele, so ask us which to pair with yours. For both routes, a damp cloth inside and a wash with warm soapy water outside is the whole maintenance routine.
