Fence Panel Capping – Hardwood
Cap a hardwood fence and you finish the one detail that decides whether a boundary looks built or thrown up. This is a planed hardwood capping strip, 88 mm wide by 35 mm high and 1800 mm long, machined with a 49 mm by 11 mm rebate along its underside so it drops straight over the top of a panel and sheds water clear of the end grain. The timber carries the Indonesian legal wood quality mark. Stocked in our warehouse for delivery across Ireland, it is cut to suit our 1800 mm hardwood panels, so one length caps one panel with no joint on show.
Why hardwood?
Capping takes more weather than the panel underneath it. It is the horizontal surface that rain sits on, so it is the first part of a fence to go if the timber is not up to it. Hardwood is dense and naturally durable outdoors, which is why it belongs on top of a hardwood fence rather than a softwood strip that will need replacing long before the panels do. It is supplied untreated and kiln dried, so it goes on stable and the finish is yours to choose.
Installation guidance
The rebate does the alignment for you: seat it over the panel top, check it sits flat along the run, and fix down through the cap. Pre-drill every fixing and use stainless steel A2 or A4 screws, because ordinary steel reacts with the natural oils and tannins in hardwood and leaves dark stains running down the face of the panel you have just capped. Where two lengths meet, cut the joint over a post so the join is supported and hidden, and seal the cut ends before you fix them.
Finishing & maintenance
You have two good options, and there is no wrong answer. Left bare the capping weathers to a soft silver grey along with the panels, which is the low effort route and keeps the whole fence ageing at the same rate. Oiling holds the warm brown colour, and it is worth doing on the cap in particular, because it is the surface that takes the most sun and rain.
If you oil, use a penetrating hardwood oil and refresh it every two or three years, and expect the cap to want recoating a little sooner than the panels do. Avoid film forming varnishes and solvent heavy stains, which sit on the surface of a dense hardwood, flake and trap moisture underneath. We stock the oils that pair correctly with hardwood, so ask us if you are unsure which to specify.
