Treated C24 Timber
4.5×3 treated whitewood, 115 by 75 mm, is a heavier outdoor post and short bearer: main gate posts, pergola corners carrying a beam, and structural legs on larger garden buildings. Strength-graded to C24 and kiln-dried below 22% moisture content before treatment. Lengths run from 3 m to 5.4 m. Stocked in our warehouse for delivery across Ireland.
Why treated C24?
The extra width over a 4×3 does two things outdoors. It gives a wider seat where a beam lands on the post, so the load is spread rather than concentrated on an edge that will crush and then hold water. It also leaves more sound timber around a bolt hole, which matters because a bolted connection outdoors works loose as timber moves and needs material to bear against.
Installation guidance
Bolt rather than nail every structural connection, and treat the inside of each bolt hole before assembly. Keep bolts at least four diameters from any end. Where a beam sits on the post, use a galvanised bracket or a proper seat rather than relying on the end grain of the post to carry it. Treat every cut face, including notches, as you make them.
Finishing & maintenance
Oil or stain an exposed post once dry, and expect to refresh it every few years on a south facing elevation. Check bolts after the first year and again after the second, since timber outdoors moves most early on. The untreated section, for dry covered work, is 4.5×3 C24 timber rough sawn. Compare it with the 4×3 and the rest of our C24 treated timber range. To compare sawn and treated sizes side by side, see our construction timber page.
