Treated C24 Timber
6×2 treated whitewood, 150 by 44 mm, is the deck joist: the section most decks in Ireland are built on, along with rafters in open structures, carport framing and joists over ventilated voids. Strength-graded to C24 and kiln-dried below 22% moisture content before treatment, it is supplied with the certification needed for sign-off. Lengths run from 3 m to 7.2 m. Stocked in our warehouse for delivery across Ireland.
Why treated C24?
A deck frame is the hardest working treated timber most people will ever buy. It is horizontal, it is shaded, it stays damp under the boards for days after rain, and replacing it means lifting the whole deck. Every joist should be treated as a matter of course. The C24 grade matters too, because deck joists are usually spanning further than people assume.
Installation guidance
Set joists at 400 mm centres for most deck boards, and closer where boards run diagonally. Treat every cut end, and pay attention to the tops: water sitting on a joist top face is what rots a deck frame from the inside. Many builders run a strip of joist tape along the top of each joist for exactly that reason. Use stainless or hot dip galvanised joist hangers and fixings throughout.
Finishing & maintenance
The frame will not be seen, so there is nothing to finish, but the exposed ends at the perimeter benefit from a coat of end grain preservative and a stain. For an internal floor or roof, the untreated section is the right specification: 6×2 C24 timber rough sawn. For longer deck spans, compare the 7×2 and 9×2 in our C24 treated timber range. To compare sawn and treated sizes side by side, see our construction timber page.
