Fence Panel Capping – Black-Sprayed Spruce

Cap a black fence in anything other than black and you undo the look in one length. This is a planed spruce capping strip sprayed a deep, even black, 85 mm wide by 35 mm high and 1800 mm long, with a pyramid head that sheds water off both sides rather than letting it stand. A 55 mm by 11 mm rebate runs along the underside so it seats straight over the panel top. The timber is pressure treated and PEFC certified. Stocked in our warehouse for delivery across Ireland, one length caps one 1800 mm panel.

Why sprayed spruce?

Spruce machines cleanly and takes a sprayed coating evenly, which is what gives this cap its uniform factory black rather than the patchy finish of a brushed on job. The pyramid head is doing real work as well as looking sharp: a capping strip is the horizontal surface rain sits on, and a pitched top gets that water moving instead of soaking into the grain.

The honest note is that spruce is not naturally durable outdoors on its own. The pressure treatment and the coating are what carry it, which is exactly why a bare softwood cap fails first on a fence and this one does not.

Installation guidance

Seat the rebate over the panel top, check the run is flat, and fix down through the cap. Pre-drill so you do not split the section, and use stainless steel fixings rather than bright steel, because a rust streak down a black fence shows up more than on any other finish. Cut joints over a post so they are supported and out of sight, and touch in every cut end and drill hole with black stain before you fix, since bare spruce at a cut end is exactly where water gets in.

Finishing & maintenance

Be clear from the start: this is a coated cap, not a maintenance free one. You have two good options, and there is no wrong answer. The hands off route is to let the factory spray do its job, washing it down a couple of times a year and leaving it be. The proactive route keeps the black looking new, touching up knocks and scratches as they appear and refreshing the coating every few years. Most of our customers take the proactive route on the cap even when they leave the panels, because it is the part at eye level catching the light.

When you re-coat, use a quality black exterior wood stain and avoid film forming gloss paints and clear varnishes over the black, which crack, peel and trap moisture rather than letting the timber breathe.
