Pros and cons
Cast iron construction, dimensionally stable and weighty enough to anchor a 101 mm post
Lifts post end-grain clear of the ground, drastically extending timber lifespan
Black protective coating resists corrosion straight out of the box
Bolts down into concrete or paving for a permanent, plumb installation
Heavier than aluminium alternatives, so lifting and positioning takes a second pair of hands
Visible at the base of the post; a design feature rather than a hidden fixing

Iron Pole Holder Flat Footrest
If you’ve gone to the trouble of specifying solid timber posts for your pergola, fence, or garden structure, the last thing you want is for them to rot at the base within five years. This iron pole holder lifts your post clear of the ground on a robust cast-iron footrest, breaking the contact between end-grain and standing water. It’s the single most effective thing you can do to extend the life of an exposed post, and it costs a fraction of replacing rotted timber later.
The footrest sized for 101 mm posts is designed to bolt down into a concrete pad or paving slab, holding your timber upright and plumb while shedding rainwater away from the base. Once installed, it stays put: cast iron is heavy, dimensionally stable, and shrugs off everything an Irish winter can throw at it.
Why use a pole holder?
Timber posts buried directly in soil or concrete fail from the inside out. Moisture wicks up the end-grain, fungi take hold, and what looks fine on the surface is hollow within a few years. A pole holder solves this by keeping the post above ground entirely, with airflow underneath. You also gain the option to remove or replace the post later without breaking up concrete.
Installation guidance
Set the footrest into wet concrete or bolt it onto a cured pad with appropriate masonry anchors (M12 minimum). Make sure the base is level before the concrete sets, since adjustments after the fact are limited. Slot your 101 mm post into the cup, plumb it, and secure with the bolt holes provided. For exposed locations or tall posts, brace temporarily until the concrete is fully cured.
Finishing & maintenance
The footrest comes with a black protective coating that does most of the heavy lifting. Most of our customers leave it as-is and never think about it again. If you want extra protection or a refresh after a few seasons, a coat of cold galvanising spray or exterior-grade metal paint will keep it looking sharp and add another layer of corrosion resistance. We stock the right finishes if you’d like to ask which to pair with cast-iron hardware.
