Walnut veneered MDF is a 19 mm board with real crown cut walnut on both faces. It is the darkest and the most expensive veneer we carry, and it is the one people pick when the piece is meant to be the focal point.
The colour is a deep chocolate brown, often with purple and grey running through it, and the texture is fine enough that the figure reads as movement rather than as pattern. Walnut is unusual in that it lightens with exposure to light instead of darkening, so a piece mellows towards a warmer brown over a few years. Worth knowing if you are matching new work to something existing, because the old piece will not be the colour it started as.
Cutting and handling
Two people to a sheet at 40.66 kg, and a clear bench to set it on. Score the face before cutting, use a sharp fine tooth blade and never drag a sheet across anything: a scratch through walnut is more obvious than on any other veneer here and it cannot be sanded out. Keep the good face upwards and support the offcut. Work with extraction or outside, in a P2 or P3 mask.
Fixing and painting
Pilot every hole, use coarse threaded MDF screws, and put dowels or a mechanical fitting wherever a joint is loaded. Lip exposed edges in solid walnut and fit the lipping before final sanding, because the join between lipping and face has to be invisible on a timber this dark. Sand to 180 or 240 grit and stop; sanding through on a corner is unrecoverable. A clear finish is usually enough, since the colour is already there.
Where not to use it
Dry interiors, like every board on an MDF core. Over a very large area it absorbs a lot of light, so in a small room with one window it will feel heavier than a sample suggests, and mahogany gives warmth at a lighter weight. The full range of species is on the veneered MDF page and the MDF page.
