Mahogany veneered MDF is a 19 mm board faced both sides in real crown cut mahogany. It is the cabinet thickness in the most traditional looking timber we carry.
Mahogany is a warm red brown with a fine, even texture and a straight, quiet grain, and it deepens with age and light rather than fading. Crown cut gives it broad, soft arches rather than the ribbon figure people sometimes expect. That is why it still turns up on library fit outs, boardrooms, panelled halls and reproduction joinery: it reads as an established material in a way the pale timbers do not, and it does not date the way a fashionable finish does. It is also the easiest of these veneers to match into existing period joinery.
Cutting and handling
Two people to a sheet at 40.66 kg, or one and a panel trolley. Score the face veneer along the line before the main pass and cut with a sharp fine tooth blade, good face upwards. The close grain cuts more cleanly than ash or oak, but it also shows a burnished mark from a dull blade, so keep a fresh one for the cuts that will be seen. Work with extraction or outdoors in a P2 or P3 mask.
Fixing and painting
Pilot drill before any screw, use coarse threaded MDF screws, and put dowels or a mechanical fitting into loaded joints. Lip exposed edges in a matching solid and fit the lipping before final sanding. Sand no further than 180 or 240 grit. Finish sparingly: mahogany darkens on its own over the first year or two, so a heavily tinted finish that looks right on the day will be considerably deeper by the time anyone comes back to it.
Where not to use it
An MDF core means dry interiors, so nothing damp. If you want a dark timber that stays where you put it, walnut moves the other way and lightens instead. All the species are on the veneered MDF page, alongside the wider MDF range.
