Coloured all the way through; cuts, routed profiles and drilled holes stay the same colour as the face

Higher density and stronger internal cohesion than standard MDF; machines cleanly with less tool wear

Natural colour variation between sheets and within sheets; lay panels out before installation to minimise visible difference
Surface needs a finish (varnish, wax or oil) to protect the colour and the texture in service

Black Valchromat is the colour most people in this range end up buying. The dye is mixed into the fibre before the board is pressed, so the colour goes all the way through and a cut edge comes out the same black as the face.
That is worth paying for if the edges of the job are on show. There is no tape to fall off, no white line appearing at a mitre, and a shadow gap or a finger pull routed into the face stays black inside instead of showing a pale MDF core. On black in particular the effect is stronger than on any other colour, because a raw MDF edge against black is about as obvious as a mistake gets.
Cutting and handling
A sheet is 48 kg and a two person lift, and the board is noticeably denser and harder than ordinary MDF. That works in your favour on the saw, because it cuts crisply without furring, but it will take the edge off a blade quicker than you expect. Use a sharp fine toothed blade and let it cut at its own pace. The dust is black and it gets on everything, so work with extraction, outdoors if you can, and wear a P2 or P3 mask.
Fixing and painting
Straight off the saw the surface looks flat and slightly chalky, and people often think the sheet is the wrong colour. It is not: an oil or hardwax oil brings the black up properly, and the difference between the bare and the oiled board is dramatic. Do the edges at the same time as the faces. Screws hold well in a board this dense, though a pilot hole near an edge is still worth the thirty seconds.
Where not to use it
It is moisture resistant, not waterproof, so a splashback is fine and a shower wall is not. Black also shows dust, fingerprints and every scuff, so think twice about a worktop or a low table in a busy house: chocolate or grey hide daily marks far better. The other ten colours are on the coloured MDF page, and the rest of the boards on the MDF page.
