Grey Valchromat has the colour dyed through the whole board rather than applied to the surface.
This is the mid tone, and it is the one to pick if the piece has to survive being used. A mid grey hides fingerprints, dust and light scuffing far better than either the black or the pale end of the range, which is why it turns up so often on desks, workbench surrounds, joinery in busy rooms and anything with drawers people pull open with dirty hands. It also sits comfortably beside oak, ash, galvanised steel and concrete without anyone having to think about whether it matches.
Cutting and handling
Forty eight kilos means two people and a clear space to put the sheet down. The board is dense, so a sharp fine toothed blade gives an edge that needs almost no sanding, and a router leaves a profile crisp enough to be the detail on the front of a drawer. Budget for blades and cut with extraction and a P2 or P3 mask. Keep the good face upwards and put a scrap sheet underneath where the underside will be seen.
Fixing and painting
Unfinished it looks chalky and a little lifeless; oil pulls the depth out of it and settles the colour. Hardwax oil is the usual choice and two coats is right for anything handled daily. Coat the edges with the faces so a piece does not end up two tones. A screw holds firmly in a board this dense, and for knock down fittings this is one of the better MDFs to work with, but still pilot anything within about 25 mm of an edge.
Where not to use it
Moisture resistant covers a kitchen or a utility room; it does not cover a shower or an outdoor bench. If you want something that reads as a colour rather than a neutral, blue and green mint are at the other end of the same range.
