Steamed Beech
Steamed beech gives you an even, warm pink brown right through the board, which is exactly what you want when a run of components has to match. Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is steamed after sawing to soften and unify its natural colour, so the sharp contrast between heart and sap disappears and what arrives is consistent, dense and hard wearing. It is the standard choice for chair frames, worktops, toys, kitchenware and any turned or steam bent work. Imported from Central Europe and stocked in our yard for delivery across Ireland in thicknesses from 26 to 65 mm, kiln dried, with FSC and PEFC certified supply available on request. Sold by the cubic foot and priced on enquiry.
Why Beech?
It is hard, close grained and completely without odour or taste, which is why it has always been the timber for chopping boards and kitchen tools. It turns superbly, steam bends as well as ash, and it takes a fine finish with almost no grain filling. At around 720 kg per cubic metre it is as dense as oak, so it stands up to daily use.
Be aware that beech moves. It is one of the less stable cabinet timbers, expanding and contracting noticeably with humidity, and it is durability class 5 with no rot resistance at all. Keep it indoors and keep it dry.
Installation guidance
Acclimatise it properly, three weeks stickered flat in the room it will live in, because beech will tell you if you rushed it. Allow wide panels and worktops to move across their width using slotted fixings rather than screwing solid, and seal both faces of a worktop equally so one side does not take up moisture faster than the other.
Finishing & maintenance
Interior only, so keep it simple. A hardwax oil suits worktops and furniture and repairs locally. For anything used with food, a food safe oil is the right call and needs topping up every few months. We stock finishes that suit beech, so ask us which to pair with yours. Wipe spills promptly and never let water stand on it.
