Smooth hardwood face that takes oil, lacquer or paint cleanly; the layered edge looks the part on show
Cross-grain birch construction stays flat, resists warping, and holds screws and fixings reliably
Meets EN 13986 and EN 314-2; bonded to a graded standard for predictable performance
Suits a wide range of interior work: furniture, cabinetry, shop fitting, drawer boxes, signage, toys
Face veneer can chip on cross-cuts without a sharp blade and proper support beneath the cut
Best kept dry; not intended for sustained wet or exterior exposure

15 mm birch plywood is a cabinet board people choose for what it gives back: more space inside the unit, and less weight to lift. It does most of what the standard 18 mm board does, and it returns a little space inside every cabinet and six kilos off every sheet.
Fitted cupboards, wardrobes and runs of units are where the saving adds up. Three millimetres off each side is six millimetres more usable width inside every cabinet, and across a run of five or six that can be the difference between a drawer box fitting and not fitting. Eleven layers is plenty for a cabinet side, a fixed shelf over a normal span or an internal divider. Weight is the other reason, and you notice it most overhead: 30.4 kg against 36.4 kg for the thicker board makes holding a wall unit up while you scribe and fix it a good deal easier.
Cutting and handling
Cut with a fine toothed blade, good face upwards, and support the sheet along the cut line rather than just at the ends. At 30.4 kg one person can manage it on the flat, though a second pair of hands helps on a stair.
Fixing and painting
Pilot screws going into an edge and keep them centred in the thickness. That is harder than it sounds by eye, and a simple drilling jig pays for itself on the first cabinet. Sand and finish the edges at the same time as the faces if they will be seen.
Where not to use it
Where it falls short is hardware. Cabinet fittings are sized for a thicker board, so the long assembly screws used at corners will not reach full depth in the edge, and shelf pin holes leave less material either side. If the unit is taking heavy doors or a lot of knock down fittings, use the 18 mm board. Damp rooms want marine plywood. The rest of the thicknesses are listed on the birch plywood page and the plywood page.
