Smooth hardwood face that takes oil, lacquer or paint cleanly; the layered edge looks the part on show
Cross-grain birch construction stays flat, resists warping, and holds screws and fixings reliably
Meets EN 13986 and EN 314-2; bonded to a graded standard for predictable performance
Suits a wide range of interior work: furniture, cabinetry, shop fitting, drawer boxes, signage, toys
Face veneer can chip on cross-cuts without a sharp blade and proper support beneath the cut
Best kept dry; not intended for sustained wet or exterior exposure

24 mm birch plywood gets used for two quite different reasons, and most jobs need only one of them. It spans without any support underneath, and it is deep enough to shape the edge into a finished detail.
Seventeen layers of birch will carry a worktop, a bench, a desk, a stair tread or a long shelf with nothing underneath it, and that is the point of the thickness. A thinner board with a rail beneath will hold the same weight, but the rail has to be made and fixed and then either hidden or lived with, and it takes up the space under the surface. The second reason is the edge: seventeen layers across 24 mm makes a stripe with real presence, and at this depth you can round over or chamfer the edge itself instead of gluing an edging strip on, so the cutter reveals the layers as a curve rather than a flat stack.
Cutting and handling
A two person lift, and worth planning the route in before it arrives. Check what your saw will cut before you order: plenty of cordless track saws lose most of their depth once the blade is tilted, and a 45 degree cut through this board is beyond a good few of them. Rip it slowly and leave the riving knife in place, because a thick dense board holds enough tension to close on the blade as you cut.
Fixing and painting
The edge takes a fixing at full depth, so a worktop can be screwed down through bearers without anything showing on the face. If you have shaped the edge, sand the profile and the face together and give the profile an extra coat: cut end grain inside a round over drinks finish faster than anything else on the board.
Where not to use it
If you do not need the board to span and you are not shaping the edge, the 18 mm board does the same cabinet work for less money. It is still an interior board, so a wet area wants marine plywood. The other thicknesses are on the birch plywood page, with the rest of the range on the plywood page.
