Smooth hardwood face that takes oil, lacquer or paint cleanly; the layered edge looks the part on show
Cross-grain birch construction stays flat, resists warping, and holds screws and fixings reliably
Meets EN 13986 and EN 314-2; bonded to a graded standard for predictable performance
Suits a wide range of interior work: furniture, cabinetry, shop fitting, drawer boxes, signage, toys
Face veneer can chip on cross-cuts without a sharp blade and proper support beneath the cut
Best kept dry; not intended for sustained wet or exterior exposure

24 mm birch plywood in the wide 1550×3050 mm sheet, which is the board people order when they want a worktop or a bench in one piece. It is the thickest birch we carry in this size, and the combination of depth and width is what makes it a worktop rather than a panel.
A standard kitchen worktop is 600 to 650 mm deep and an island is often more. Cut from a 1220 mm sheet you are joining two pieces or accepting a narrow top; cut from this one you have the depth with room to spare, and 3050 mm of length to play with. On an island or a long run, that means no joint at all, which is the difference between a top that looks made and one that looks assembled.
Cutting and handling
This is the heaviest sheet in the birch range and it wants two strong people and a planned route. Check what your saw will cut before it arrives: plenty of cordless track saws lose most of their depth once the blade is tilted, and a bevel through this board is beyond a good few of them. Rip slowly with the riving knife in place, because a thick dense panel holds enough tension to close on the blade.
Fixing and painting
At 24 mm the edge is deep enough to shape rather than cover. A round over, a chamfer or a shallow bullnose cut straight into the board shows the layers as a curve, which is the detail most exposed edge furniture is built around. Sand progressively and oil or lacquer the edge alongside the face, giving the edge an extra coat: the exposed end grain drinks finish far faster than the flat face does.
Where not to use it
Keep it out of wet areas and use marine plywood there. If the top is going to be covered by laminate or tiles, you are paying for a face nobody will see. And if you do not need the width or the span, the 8×4 sheet does the same job for less. Every thickness we carry is listed on the birch plywood page, and the other grades on the plywood page.
