Structural OSB 3 Sheet
Structural OSB 3 is the lightweight, knot-free panel that’s quietly behind a huge proportion of the country’s flooring, roofing, sheathing and hoarding work. At 18 mm you have a strong, stable sheet that’s easy to handle, easy to cut, and ready to take a fixing anywhere across the face. We stock it in our yard in Dublin, ready for fast delivery anywhere in Ireland.
Why OSB 3?
OSB 3 is built from large oriented wood strands bonded with resin and pressed into a dense, knot-free panel. With no knots or voids running through the structure, you can fix anywhere on the sheet with predictable results, and the strand orientation gives it real strength along the length of the board. You’ll find it across flooring, roofing, wall sheathing, hoarding, site protection, shed and garden building construction, furniture frames, and van lining.
The panel is classified Structural Grade CE2+ to BS EN 300 OSB 3, the European standard for load-bearing boards for use in humid conditions. In plain terms: it’s certified to take real working loads as a structural element (the CE2+ system attestation means an independent body audits the factory’s quality control, not just the manufacturer’s own paperwork), and the OSB 3 grade specifically covers panels rated for humid environments. It’s suitable for Service Classes 1 and 2, which means controlled indoor conditions and conditions with occasional moisture exposure, the two service classes that cover almost all residential and most commercial construction.
Working with the sheet
Use a sharp TCT blade for clean cross-cuts; the resin content blunts cheap blades quickly. Pre-drill fixings near board edges to prevent the strands lifting, and stagger joints across joists or studs rather than landing them on the same line. For structural floor and roof use, fix the boards with the strand grain running across the joists, not parallel to them.
Store the sheets flat and off the ground, ideally with the edges protected. OSB is more dimensionally stable than many panels but still benefits from acclimatising on site for a day or two before fixing in heated or humid conditions.
Finishing
OSB has become a finish in its own right for exposed industrial and contemporary interiors, and most of our customers either leave it raw, oil it with a clear hardwax oil, or seal it with a clear water-based lacquer to lock down the surface and stop the strands shedding fines. For painted work, prime the face first with a high-build primer because the surface is open and absorbent and will drink ordinary paint unevenly. Ask us if you’re unsure which sealer or primer to pair with your project, and we’ll point you to what works.
