18 mm marine plywood is the one to use when something wet also has to carry weight. It is the same board as the thinner sheets, bonded to survive soaking, at a thickness that will take a person sitting on it.
Shower seats and wet room benches are the job this thickness gets asked for most. A fold down or built in seat has someone’s full weight on a short span in a permanently damp room, and there is no other board that handles both parts of that. Floor panels in a bathroom or utility, the substrate under a tiled wet floor, worktops in a boot room or outdoor kitchen, garden benches and planters, and van and horsebox floors are the rest. It is the thickness for anything screwed into heavily too, because at 18 mm the edge takes cabinet fittings properly, so hinges on a heavy door and drawer runners under load behave the way they would on a dry board.
Cutting and handling
A two person lift at 36.4 kg, the same as birch of the same size, and worth planning for before it arrives. Cut with a fine toothed blade, good face upwards. It is a dense board and it will slow a blunt blade down noticeably.
Fixing and painting
Seal the edges, the screw holes and the underside. On a floor panel the underside is the face that sits against a damp subfloor and never gets looked at again, so it wants at least as much attention as the top. Pilot edge fixings and countersink anything that will be walked on.
Where not to use it
It is a wet area board, not a ground contact or structural exterior one, so a post or a bearer in the soil needs treated timber instead. If the piece has to be lifted in and out, the 18 mm okoume board is ten kilos lighter in a bigger sheet, though it is softer. The two ranges are compared on the marine plywood page, with the rest of the boards on the plywood page.
