Cross-laminated spruce; rigid enough for load-bearing structures yet light enough to handle solo
Class 3 bond performance per EN 314-2 CPD; rated for full external weather exposure
FSC certified; sustainably sourced timber from independently audited forests
Smoother, more refined face than typical softwood plywood; suits shop fittings, joinery and furniture
Open softwood grain absorbs paint unevenly; prime the face before painting for the cleanest finish
Long-term external service life is longest when cut edges are sealed before installing

18 mm spruce plywood is the lightweight structural board, and it is what gets used for roof decking and wall sheathing where sheets have to be lifted and held in place all day.
It is a Finnish board from UPM made to a consistent standard, so sheets are the thickness they say they are and lie flat, which is worth more than it sounds when you are laying a deck and every sheet has to meet the next one. Shed and garden room roofs and walls, garage roof decking, flooring under a finish, hoardings and formwork are the usual jobs.
Cutting and handling
At 24.6 kg a sheet is 11.8 kg lighter than birch of the same size, which is the difference between passing boards up onto a roof comfortably and fighting them, and over a whole shed or garden room it decides whether it is a one person job. It cuts easily and takes a nail or screw without fuss, which is another reason it suits roof work where you are fixing a lot in a short time. Keep it dry while it waits: exterior bonding means it survives a wet spell, not that it wants to live outside, so stack it flat, off the ground and covered, and get it closed in promptly.
Fixing and painting
Pilot near edges, stagger the joints, and land every sheet edge on a rafter or stud rather than leaving it hanging. The board is bonded to Class 3, the exterior category, so it survives being rained on during the build, which is exactly what a roof deck or wall sheathing panel needs given the gap between boarding out and covering up.
Where not to use it
Class 3 bonding does not make spruce durable. Left permanently exposed the timber will decay even though the glue holds, so this board goes under a roof covering, a membrane or a cladding system, not on show. For anything genuinely wet use marine plywood. There is more on the board on the WISA spruce plywood page, with the other grades on the plywood page.
