12 mm okoume marine plywood is the cabinet thickness for anyone building where weight counts. It does the same job as the heavier hardwood marine board of the same thickness, in a longer sheet at that.
Furniture and cabinets in campers, boats and horseboxes are the main use: cabinet boxes, bed bases, seat boxes, galley units and worktops that are not going to take a hammering. This is the thickness most van conversion furniture is built from, and the weight saving across a whole build is substantial. In a house it suits bathroom cabinets and utility furniture, where the same argument applies on a smaller scale and you want a board that survives a leak.
Cutting and handling
It weighs 17.6 kg against 24.3 kg for a smaller sheet of the hardwood marine board, so if the piece has to be lifted into a vehicle, or lifted out again, the difference is worth having. The long sheet is worth planning around: at 2500 mm you can often get a full height unit and a shelf out of one board where a standard sheet would leave you short.
Fixing and painting
What you give up against the hardwood board is hardness. Okoume is a light timber, so it dents more easily and does not grip a screw as firmly, which mostly means being a bit more careful: pilot every edge screw, countersink properly, and use a fixing with a broad head rather than a fine one. Seal the edges and holes before you assemble anything, because in a vehicle the damp comes from inside as much as outside and the faces you cannot see afterwards are the ones that need it most.
Where not to use it
Not for a surface that takes abrasion or point loads every day: a galley floor or a workshop top wants the denser hardwood marine board instead. Nor is it a substitute for a properly treated timber in ground contact. There is a fuller comparison of the two ranges on the marine plywood page and the plywood page.
