18 mm okoume marine plywood is the structural board in the light range. It is the thickness for floors, bases and anything carrying weight, and it is considerably lighter than the hardwood marine board of the same thickness.
Van and horsebox floors are the main one. A vehicle floor has to take people, furniture and everything that gets dropped on it, and it has to do that in a space that gets condensation underneath, so the weight saved on each sheet matters when a conversion might use four or five of them. Bed bases and platforms, galley worktops, boat soles and bulkheads and heavy locker bases are the others. In a building it suits a bathroom or utility floor panel, or a bench in a wet area, where you want the strength but would rather not carry the heavier hardwood board up a flight of stairs.
Cutting and handling
A manageable two person lift at 26.4 kg, against 36.4 kg for the hardwood marine board, and possible alone at a push. Cut with a fine toothed blade and support the sheet across the line; okoume is soft enough that a coarse blade will tear the underside rather than cut it.
Fixing and painting
Pilot edge screws, countersink, and use washers under any fixing that will be loaded, because a soft board lets a plain screw head pull through under vibration. Seal the underside before you lay it: that face sits against the vehicle deck or the subfloor, will never be reachable again, and is the side that sees the worst of the condensation.
Where not to use it
The trade off is hardness. Okoume is softer, so a floor in this board picks up dents that a hardwood board would shrug off, and if the floor takes trolleys, tools or heavy boots every day the hardwood marine board is the better buy. This is the sensible one for a living space. How the two ranges differ is set out on the marine plywood page and the plywood page.
