15 mm MDF is the cabinet thickness in the wide sheet. Nearly every other board is 1220 mm across, and that width quietly decides a lot of joinery: ripped down the middle a 1220 sheet gives two pieces just over 600 mm, while this one gives two just over 760 mm.
Base unit depth plus a worktop overhang lands above 600 mm, and so do most deep shelving and desk modules, so from the narrow sheet every one of those rips leaves a useless strip while the same parts come clean off this one. Over a fitted run the sheet count drops with the waste. The width also gives panels you cannot otherwise have whole: a deep gable, a broad cupboard back, a full width headboard, and with the 3050 mm length a full height gable deeper than a standard unit, with no joint in either direction.
Cutting and handling
At 50.2 kg it is a big awkward rectangle more than a heavy one, but it is still two people on edge, and the doorways want measuring before it arrives because a sheet this wide will not turn on a standard domestic landing. Check the cutting setup as well: 1525 mm overhangs most benches, so it needs a proper track and full support underneath, and the offcut has to be carried or it snaps off the end of the cut.
Fixing and painting
Glue and confirmat for the boxes. Pre-drill anything going into an edge and keep it back from the corner, because the edge splits without a pilot hole. Prime face and edges with a dedicated MDF primer and sand between coats, doing the edges first and letting them sit, since they take a coat more than the face does and a panel this wide leaves you plenty of face to match them to.
Where not to use it
The core swells once it gets wet and does not recover, so if the job is a kitchen, a bathroom or a utility room use the moisture resistant grade instead. The rest of the thicknesses are on the Standard MDF page, and the wider range is on the MDF boards page.
