18 mm MDF is the thickness almost every fitted piece is drawn in, here in the wide sheet. The width is the argument for it: nearly every other board is 1220 mm across, and ripped down the middle that gives two pieces just over 600 mm, where this one gives two just over 760 mm.
Base unit depth plus a worktop overhang sits above 600 mm, and so do most deep shelving and desk modules, so tops and deep gables cut from the narrow sheet waste a strip on every rip while the same parts come clean off this one. Over a fitted kitchen the sheet count drops. The width also buys pieces a standard sheet cannot give you whole: a deep desk top, a full width headboard, and with 3050 mm of length a full height gable deeper than a standard unit, with no joint in either direction.
Cutting and handling
At 60.3 kg and oversized in both directions this is a two person lift. Take it on edge and measure the route first, because it will not turn on a domestic landing or clear some doorways at all, so cut it down where it is delivered. A 1525 mm width overhangs any bench, so work on the flat with a track and full support underneath, and store the sheet flat rather than leaning, because a panel this size bows quickly and a bowed top is scrap.
Fixing and painting
Glue and confirmat, or glue and dowel, for cabinet work. Pre-drill everything going into an edge and keep it back from the corner, because the edge splits without a pilot hole and a split in a panel this size is expensive. Prime face and edges with a dedicated MDF primer and sand between coats, giving the edges and any routed profile a second pass, since they drink far more finish than the face.
Where not to use it
The core swells once it gets wet and does not recover, so if the job is a kitchen, a bathroom or a utility room use the moisture resistant grade instead. The rest of the thicknesses are on the Standard MDF page, and the wider range is on the MDF boards page.
