Real solid edge-glued pine that saws, drills, sands and machines just like natural timber
Takes paint, stain, varnish or oil, and can be refinished years later
Edge-glued construction keeps the panel flatter and more stable than a single wide plank
AB grade gives a clean A face for show and a sound B reverse for value
As solid wood it moves with humidity, so both faces need sealing equally to stay flat
Bond rating for damp areas is not confirmed, so treat as interior unless verified

18 mm laminated pine board is solid timber rather than plywood. It is made from narrow strips of pine edge glued together into a full sheet, so what you get is a real timber surface with the stability of a manufactured panel.
Plywood is thin layers glued in alternating directions; this board is solid pine strips running the same way, joined side by side, which gives you two things plywood cannot: a surface that looks and works like solid timber, and an edge you can plane, round over or mould without any layers showing. Shelving is the main job, because a pine board shelf can be sanded, waxed or oiled and left on show and the front edge finishes like solid timber. Desk and table tops, window boards, stair treads and risers, box furniture, bench seats and utility worktops are the rest. AB grade describes the two faces: the A face is the tidier one with fewer and smaller knots and is the side you show, while the B face is sound but has more character.
Cutting and handling
At 26 kg it is a comfortable two person lift. Cut it with a sharp fine toothed blade, and watch for the board pinching the blade as internal tension releases, because it cuts more like a plank than a panel. Let it acclimatise in the room before you fix it.
Fixing and painting
Fix it so it can move: on a wide top, slotted fixings or buttons let the board expand and contract across its width instead of splitting or cupping. Knot the A face before painting or the resin will bleed through, though most people oil or wax it instead, which suits the timber better.
Where not to use it
It behaves like solid timber, so it moves more across its width with changes in humidity and it is not as strong across the grain as a plywood panel of the same thickness. Where you need that strength, use a plywood from the softwood plywood page, and for anything damp use marine plywood. The plywood sheets we carry alongside it are on the plywood page.
