Yellow Balau Battens for Sale in Ireland
Yellow Balau is one of the densest tropical hardwoods on the market, at around 930 kg/m³, more than twice the density of cedar. That density gives it Durability Class 1, the highest rating, with a service life of 20 to 25 years and natural resistance to rot, insects and fungal decay. It has been used for marine work, busy commercial decks and exposed architecture for decades.
The battens arrive a warm golden yellow-brown with a fine, even grain that takes a finish beautifully. Choose them when a screen or fence has to last and look sharp with the least worry.
Yellow Balau batten sizes
Every batten is PAO, meaning planed all over, so all four faces are smooth and ready to use. The narrow 45×22 mm batten suits fine slatted screens, trellis work and cladding with strong shadow lines. The wide 95×22 mm batten is for screens, gates and planters, and for long fence runs and walls. Choose the length on the product page; longer battens mean fewer joins on long runs.
At 22 mm thick, these battens are chunkier than our 18 mm softwood battens and give a more solid look. The calculator on each product page works out how many you need, and the cart adds the fixings.
Yellow Balau vs other timber battens
Yellow Balau is the hardwood choice in our battens. If you are comparing:
- Cedar battens: naturally durable too, much lighter and easier to cut.
- Larch battens: dense larch, a tough softwood at a lower price.
- Ecowood battens: the value choice for long runs.
To match a deck, pair the battens with Yellow Balau decking.
Fixing Yellow Balau battens
At this density, a hardwood batten needs care to fix well:
- Pre-drill at every fixing point. Forcing a screw or nail into Yellow Balau splits the timber.
- Use A2 or A4 stainless steel screws or ringshank nails, never galvanised or mild steel.
- Use a spacer block to keep the gaps even on a slatted screen.
Looking after Yellow Balau battens
Yellow Balau doesn’t need treating to last, but left bare it weathers to an even silver patina. Most people oil it within the first few months to keep the warm golden colour, then refresh the oil every year or two. Choose a hardwood oil from our exterior oils and stains, which also helps the surface shed water.
Yellow Balau is one of the species in our full timber battens range, stocked in our warehouse and delivered across Ireland.
