Treated C24 Timber
3×1 treated whitewood, 75 by 22 mm, is the batten that lives on the wet side of a build: tile and slate battens under a covering, counter battens outside the breather membrane, and cavity battens behind cladding. Strength-graded to C24 and kiln-dried below 22% moisture content before treatment, it carries the same certification as our sawn range with preservative driven in under vacuum pressure. Lengths run from 3 m to 5.4 m. Stocked in our warehouse for delivery across Ireland.
Why treated C24?
A batten outside the membrane is one of the hardest places in a building for timber to survive. It gets wet, it dries slowly because it is in a cavity, and nobody will ever see it fail until the cladding comes off. Treatment is the whole reason to use this rather than an untreated batten, and because the preservative is pressure driven it reaches into a section this thin all the way through rather than sitting on the face.
Installation guidance
Treat every cut end before fixing, which on battens means almost every piece, because a batten run is nothing but cut ends. Use stainless or heavily galvanised nails: the copper based preservative will corrode plain steel, and a batten held by rusted nails is no better than an untreated one. Fix through into the rafter or stud behind, two fixings at each bearing, and pre-drill near the ends of a section this narrow.
Finishing & maintenance
Treated battens are meant to be buried in a build-up and left alone, so there is no finishing to do. The green tint fades in the first months of exposure and has no bearing on protection. For dry internal battening there is no reason to pay for treatment: the same section is available untreated as 3×1 C24 timber rough sawn. Compare it with the deeper battens in our C24 treated timber range. To compare sawn and treated sizes side by side, see our construction timber page.
