5 mm flexible plywood long grain is the thinner of the two bendy ply thicknesses, and it is the one that comes round a tight radius. This is the long grain version, which bends in the opposite direction to the cross grain sheet.
Tighter curves are what it is for, where the thicker sheet would fight you or crack: rounded cabinet ends, small radius column casings, curved drawer fronts, and the returns at the end of a curved run where the radius pulls in. It is also the sheet to choose when you are laminating, which is the proper way to build a permanent curve. Make a former in the shape of the curve, glue two layers together over it, clamp well and leave until the glue has fully cured, and the pair comes off rigid and holds the shape on its own, which a single sheet never will.
Cutting and handling
Cut it on a supported bench with a fine toothed blade, and store it flat rather than leaning against a wall, where it takes a permanent kink. Bendy ply sags under its own weight, so an unsupported sheet drops into the blade and gives a wandering cut. The quick way to check which way a sheet rolls is to lay it flat and lift one edge: it rolls easily along one axis and resists along the other.
Fixing and painting
Build the former slightly tighter than the finished curve, because there is always some spring back when the clamps come off and it is easier to let a piece relax into shape than to pull it in afterwards. If you are fixing to ribs rather than laminating, space them closer than you would for a flat panel: any flat between supports reads as a dent once the curve is painted or veneered.
Where not to use it
Bendy ply only bends one way, so before you order work out which dimension of the sheet has to wrap around your curve. A sheet that rolls the wrong way is no use at all and cannot be made to work: forcing it cracks the face. If you are unsure before ordering, ring us and describe the shape. The cross grain sheet bends the other way, and there is more on choosing between them on the flexible plywood page and the plywood page.
