American Ash

Ash is the timber to choose when a piece has to take a beating and still look light. American ash (Fraxinus americana) is pale cream to light brown with a bold, open, straight grain, and it is exceptionally tough for its weight, which is why it has always been the material for tool handles, sports equipment, chair frames and steam bent work. If you are building something that will be sat on, leaned on or knocked about, ash absorbs shock in a way that harder, more brittle timbers do not. Imported from the United States and stocked in our yard for delivery across Ireland in thicknesses from 26 to 65 mm, kiln dried, with FSC and PEFC certified supply available on request. Why American Ash?

Two properties do the work. Its shock resistance is close to the best of any commercial hardwood, so a chair leg or a handle flexes rather than snapping. And it steam bends better than almost anything else we stock, which opens up curved backs, hoops and laminated forms that would need cutting from solid in another species.

The pale colour also makes it a genuinely modern looking timber, closer to a Scandinavian oak or maple than to a traditional dark hardwood, and it takes stain more evenly than most because the grain is so consistent. It is a common choice for flooring and worktops where you want brightness without paying maple money.

The honest limitation is durability. Ash is class 5, not durable, with no meaningful resistance to decay or insect attack. It has no business outdoors untreated, and even a covered porch is asking for trouble. This is interior timber, and specifying it for anything exposed is the one real mistake people make with it.

Installation guidance

Let it settle for two to three weeks in the room it will live in, stickered flat with air to both faces, before machining. Ash moves a fair amount in service, so this step matters more here than on a more stable species.

The open ring porous grain means end grain drinks glue and finish, so seal it before assembly on anything visible. Pre drill near ends and edges to avoid splitting along the grain lines, which run very straight and split cleanly. If you are steam bending, work green or freshly steamed stock and allow generous setting time in the form.

Finishing & maintenance

Ash is interior only, so this is short. A hardwax oil keeps it pale and natural and repairs locally, while a lacquer gives you a harder film for a floor or a worktop. Avoid oil based polyurethane if you want it to stay pale, because it will pull the colour yellow. We stock finishes that suit light hardwoods, so ask us which to pair with yours. Wipe spills promptly and clean with a barely damp cloth.
