Beam Oak

An oak frame carries a roof for a century and looks better every decade it does it. If you are building a porch, a garage, an open barn or a full frame extension, you are working with the one structural timber that needs no preservative treatment at all: European oak (Quercus robur) is durability class 2, so it stands up to Irish weather on its own merits, for an indicative fifteen to twenty five years in exposed conditions and far longer under cover. We convert ours from whole logs out of France, Croatia and Poland in sections from 100 to 300 mm, stocked in our yard for delivery across Ireland, with FSC and PEFC certified supply available on request. Each log is scanned before conversion and cut to the sizes that give the best yield from it, so beams come in a range of lengths rather than to a standard schedule, and oak is sold by the cubic foot and priced on enquiry.

Why European Oak?

Oak has framed buildings in this part of the world for six hundred years, and the reason is simple. It is strong, stiff and naturally durable in the same piece of timber, which almost nothing else manages. That combination lets you span further on a smaller section than a softwood frame would need, so the frame reads lighter even though the timber is heavier.

Here is the part worth knowing before you order. Fresh sawn oak is green, meaning it still holds most of its original moisture, and it will dry in place over the first two to three years. As it does, it shrinks slightly across the section, twists a little, and opens shakes along the grain. That is not a defect and it does not weaken the frame: traditional oak framing assumes it, which is why the joints are pegged rather than glued. If you want a beam that stays exactly as delivered, you want air dried stock instead, and we can quote that.

Installation guidance

If you have framed in softwood, oak will not surprise you structurally, but it does ask for a different fixing discipline. Drill and peg rather than nailing, and pre drill anything you screw, because green oak is dense enough to split when forced.

The one detail people get wrong is metal. Oak is high in tannin, which reacts with iron and leaves black staining that runs right into the fibre and will not sand out. Use stainless steel throughout, ideally A4 grade 316 on anything exposed, and keep oak off wet concrete for the same reason. Set posts on stainless or galvanised shoes clear of standing water rather than bedding them into the ground.

Finishing & maintenance

You have two legitimate routes here. Leave the frame bare and it will move from honey brown to silver grey over roughly twelve to eighteen months, which is the look most oak framed buildings in Ireland end up with and asks nothing of you. Or oil it and hold the warm colour, which means a fresh coat every year or two depending on how exposed the frame is. Most of our customers leave structural frames to silver and oil only the joinery, but either is a fair choice.

Whichever you pick, avoid film forming finishes: yacht varnish, gloss paint and anything that sits on the surface will crack as the oak moves and trap moisture behind it. A penetrating exterior oil is what you want, and we stock the right ones, so ask us which to pair with yours. For both routes, an occasional wash with warm soapy water and a soft brush lifts algae and keeps the grain crisp.
