Smooth hardwood face that takes oil, lacquer or paint cleanly; the layered edge looks the part on show
Cross-grain birch construction stays flat, resists warping, and holds screws and fixings reliably
Meets EN 13986 and EN 314-2; bonded to a graded standard for predictable performance
Suits a wide range of interior work: furniture, cabinetry, shop fitting, drawer boxes, signage, toys
Face veneer can chip on cross-cuts without a sharp blade and proper support beneath the cut
Best kept dry; not intended for sustained wet or exterior exposure

12 mm birch plywood is the point where the board stops being a lining and starts being furniture. Nine layers of solid birch, strong enough for small cabinets, and the first thickness whose edge looks deliberate when you leave it on show.
Small cabinets, boxes, seat bases, shelving units and display work are the usual jobs. It takes a dowel without any risk of breaking through a face, it takes a loose tenon if you have the tool for it, and it will carry a shelf over a short span without a rail underneath. The edge is the other half of it: on thinner boards the layers read as a fine line, and at 12 mm they read as a stack, which is the look behind a lot of the plywood furniture people are building at home now. It is the cheapest board in the range where leaving the edge bare is a choice rather than a compromise.
Cutting and handling
One person can manage a sheet and two can carry it up stairs easily. If the edge is going to be seen, plan the cut around it: the face layer chips outwards, so the side that will be on show wants to be the side the blade enters, and a scored line on that face is worth the few seconds it takes.
Fixing and painting
When you screw it together, pilot anything within about 25 mm of an edge, and keep screws a little way in from the corners, where the outer layers have the least to hold on to. Sand the edge up through the grits alongside the face and finish them at the same time, or the edge will look dry next to it.
Where not to use it
If the cabinet is carrying real weight or hanging a full size door, go up to the 18 mm board, which is what cabinet hardware is sized around. Keep it out of wet rooms and use marine plywood there. There is a guide to the other thicknesses on the birch plywood page and the plywood page.
