Smooth hardwood face that takes oil, lacquer or paint cleanly; the layered edge looks the part on show
Cross-grain birch construction stays flat, resists warping, and holds screws and fixings reliably
Meets EN 13986 and EN 314-2; bonded to a graded standard for predictable performance
Suits a wide range of interior work: furniture, cabinetry, shop fitting, drawer boxes, signage, toys
Face veneer can chip on cross-cuts without a sharp blade and proper support beneath the cut
Best kept dry; not intended for sustained wet or exterior exposure

18 mm birch plywood in the wide 1550×3050 mm sheet, which is the usual cabinet thickness in a panel long enough to cut deep units without a joint. This is the thickness almost every cabinet fitting is sized around, in the largest sheet we carry it in, and the two together are what make it the board for a run of deep fitted units.
The extra width does the work. A 1220 mm sheet rips to two pieces just over 600 mm, which is under the depth of a base unit once you allow for a worktop overhang. This sheet rips to two just over 760 mm, so deep units, wide shelving and desk returns come off it without a joint and without a wasted strip. The 3050 mm length covers a standard floor to ceiling run in one piece as well.
Cutting and handling
It is a heavy sheet and needs two people and a clear route in. Work out the cutting list before you start, because the width saving is only real if the pieces are nested to use it. Cut with a fine toothed blade, good face upwards, score the line where the edge will show, and support the panel along the cut rather than just at its ends.
Fixing and painting
This is the thickness that behaves properly with catalogue hardware. A concealed hinge seats with material left behind it, assembly screws run to full depth into the edge without bursting through a face, and shelf pin holes at the usual 32 mm spacing leave timber on both sides. Thirteen solid layers mean the edge has no gaps in it, so a screw bites all the way down. Pilot edge fixings even so, and if you are leaving the edge bare, finish it at the same time as the face.
Where not to use it
Not in a bathroom, a utility room or anywhere it will get wet: use marine plywood there instead, because no finish reliably keeps water out of a birch board for long. If you only need standard depth units, the 8×4 sheet costs less, handles far more easily and wastes nothing. The rest of the range is on the birch plywood page, and the other grades on the plywood page.
