Natural Alder (Saunawood) Cladding – Internal Corner Trim
This is the piece that makes a sauna look properly finished rather than home-made. Run your cladding into an internal corner and you’re left with two cut board ends meeting at an awkward join; this trim covers that line cleanly, so your walls read as one continuous, professional surface. It’s milled from the same A-grade, knot-free Natural Alder as our sauna boards — FSC-certified and stocked in our yard for delivery across Ireland.
Why Alder?
Alder (Alnus glutinosa) is the Nordic sauna timber of choice because it’s effectively resin-free and won’t weep or spit when the room heats up, and its low density keeps it gentle against bare skin. Using the matching trim rather than a generic moulding means the corner ages at the same rate and in the same tone as the surrounding boards.
Installation guidance
No mitring or scribing required — the trim simply sits into the internal corner and hides the board ends behind it, which is what makes it forgiving for a DIY fit. Pin it with stainless steel fixings only; ordinary steel rusts in the humidity and stains the wood. One tip worth following: order your trim and cladding together so they come from the same batch, since alder colour varies between batches, and allow around 15% for cutting waste.
Finishing & maintenance
Treat the trim exactly as you treat the boards, and there’s no wrong choice. Leave it bare to silver and mellow with the cladding, or wipe it with a dedicated paraffin-based sauna oil to lock in colour and make it easy to clean — most customers simply match whatever they’ve chosen for the walls. Never use ordinary varnish, lacquer or exterior wood stain inside a sauna, as none are made for sustained heat and they’ll release fumes when warm; if you’d like the correct sauna finish, just ask. Whichever route you take, a wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap is all the cleaning it needs.
